You can do languages if you're curious about how other people see the world, if you want to live experiences to the fullest, if you long to share songs and stories, if you aim to influence and persuade, if you're looking to connect across borders. Languages expand horizons and options for everyone.

On International Translation Day, I celebrate the translators who make meaning travel. I’ve translated certificates, court decisions, and clinical texts. Behind every document is a person, a story, a life. AI processes words. Human translators understand context and nuance. That's irreplaceable.

Happy European Day of Languages! For me, one language has always led to another - from school French, German and Spanish to Portuguese, Romanian, Albanian and beyond. Each has brought new friendships, journeys, laughs, music, food and ways of seeing the world. Learn a language. Open a world.

French is a gateway to diplomacy and culture. German unlocks science and philosophy. Spanish connects continents. Italian sings with music and art. Each language gives something unique - not just in professional terms, but in how it broadens perspectives and fosters deeper engagement with the world.

Speaking another language isn’t just about being understood. It’s about understanding. It's about heightened appreciation for your own language. It’s about being able to immerse yourself in different cultures, see the world through a new lens, and engage in ways that would be impossible otherwise.

Imagine learning a language and suddenly being able to understand the song everyone else is singing, chat with people you’d never otherwise meet, travel somewhere new and feel like you belong, truly connect, and unlock opportunities you never knew existed. Another language will change your world.

I learned Spanish, French, German, Italian and Latin at school without knowing where they would lead. Spanish created a new world; Albanian brought new directions; Farsi and Mandarin expanded horizons. Languages change the people you meet, the places you discover and the life you imagined possible.

What Happens When We Close the Door on Languages?
There is something profoundly short-sighted about closing language departments, reducing opportunities to study languages, or making it harder for students to spend a year abroad. When we remove la…

If you close language departments, remove opportunities for languages GCSEs and A Levels, and make it harder for students to spend a year abroad, you limit connections, deny young people the chance to broaden their world, and lose the stories and adventures that only another language can create.

Life without another language is like a hallway of unopened doors, a room full of people eager to meet, a monochrome world waiting for colour, a story that's missing a satisfying plot twist. Learn another language, and suddenly the doors don't just open. The whole world is waiting on the other side.

If you've received your languages A Level results today, congratulations! You've unlocked another world. You've gained an edge in multiple fields. You can communicate, negotiate and elaborate across borders. You can make connections where others can't. Your options are endless.

Why should I learn another language? Maybe because you'll discover a world beyond your own. You'll connect with other humans. You'll appreciate your place in the world. You'll boost your communication and negotiating skills. You'll live new experiences. You'll be a far more rounded you. That's why.

When you learn another language, you discover a piece of the world. You learn a new 'normal', & you connect with another people. You embrace difference, & you're more aware of other ways of being & living. Not only do you develop transferable skills, but your mind is open to the wealth of humanity.

Spanish might unlock Portuguese or Italian. French could inspire Romanian or Catalan. English is a few steps away from German, Dutch or Swedish. Chinese, Farsi or Arabic make more sense when you've learned another language. Your world will grow when you discover a new language, and your mind opens.

I chose languages at school just because I enjoyed them. I didn't imagine then that they'd shape my career, take me across Europe, introduce lifelong friends or transform how I see the world. Whatever your age, it's never too late to start. Another language can change your life. It changed mine.

Christopher Hughes MBE @chrislinguist.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I look forward to a time when English students are proud to learn another language; when learning another language is a step into an exciting new world; when being "good at languages" is not unusual or elitist. Because languages are for everyone, in everything, and everyone enjoys the benefits.

I chose languages out of curiosity, never imagining they'd lead me to teach, translate, travel, and meet extraordinary people. You never know where one subject, one conversation or one opportunity might lead. Follow your curiosity. It may just change your life. albarolanguages.com/2026/07/26/w...

When I chose German at school, I had no idea it would be a giant leap on a journey that would lead to countless other languages, unforgettable experiences and a career I genuinely love. Languages may not be "easy", but they will change your life. German changed the course of mine.

Languages have taken me from classrooms to conversations, from textbooks to friendships, from uncertainty to belonging. Each language has opened a different window onto the world. You don't need to be scared of making mistakes or not finding the best words. Your first words will take you a long way.

From Spanish, French, German, Italian and Latin at school to Albanian, Basque, Farsi and Mandarin, every language has given me something priceless: new people, new cultures and new ways of seeing the world. Don't learn a language to tick a box. Learn it for the connections and adventures it creates.

Learn another language and you’ll get that magical feeling of connecting and communicating across borders and communities. You’ll gain a genuine super power: the power to understand and be understood beyond your own world. You’ll set out on an intoxicating voyage of discovery. Your world will grow.

A year abroad isn't where you learn a language. It's where you live it. Through shared flats, new friendships, cultural surprises and everyday adventures, you gain far more than words: adaptability, confidence, perspective and a home from home. It changed my Spanish, and changed me.

Humanities and sciences are not competitors. One is not intrinsically better than the other. Sciences have a defined range of right answers; humanities are open to creativity and interpretation. Maths and physics drive innovation; languages and arts feed the soul. There's room for both.

It doesn’t matter where your language story starts. It might be school French, Spanish from a treasured holiday, German because it’s close to English, Welsh, Gaelic or Cornish as part of your heritage, or the challenges of Chinese or Arabic. It's a whole new window on the world.
010
Christopher Hughes MBE @chrislinguist.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
I’ve seen languages open doors, foster relationships, build trust and create moments of genuine human connection that no algorithm could fully understand. Of course, AI has its place, but professional linguists still matter because meaning is human, context is human, and responsibility is human too.

When you speak another person's language, you connect with their heart and soul. You show that you respect their identity and heritage. You're open to their outlooks and traditions. You're not restricted to one narrow worldview. You meet other people on their own terms. You thrive.

Communicating in another language is exhilarating and transformational. It's a giant leap into another world. It's a new door opening and a window on a different way of life. It transports you beyond your horizons. And best of all - it's open to everyone, wherever your interests lie.

If “everyone speaks English anyway,” why learn another language? Because languages aren't just tools for translation, but for transformation: they sharpen how you think, build adaptability and empathy, and help you connect across cultures. They're not just for linguists. They're for everyone.

If Mandarin gets more young people excited about languages in school, fantastic; let's ride that wave. But let’s also stop treating Latin as a museum piece. Beyond the declensions lies a powerhouse for vocabulary, critical thinking and cultural literacy. All school languages shape modern minds.
