UK folks, what connotation does the word "knotty" have and why has it been used in four separate reviews of my standup show??

I have no idea why, but washing my clothes in the UK has completely discolored them, it definitely seems like it's from a pair of jeans I have, but it's a set of clothes I've washed together at least a dozen times in the US and it was always colorfast

Every year, hundreds of standups from across the world descend on the venerable festival. Here are some of their finest one-liners

Update the venue is claiming that because I got to the entrance of the venue 23 seconds late that my tickets were forfeit. They have confirmed this on CCTV. Btw not sure how they know what I look like

Chris Grace @chrisgrace.com · 19/08/2026
Yep and sell them to pay what you can folks (which I’m in support of generally but they should be a separate allocation of tickets). Now in a runaround about getting a refund.

Absolutely insane policy for a venue to release your paid tickets at Fringe when you’ve shown up five minutes ahead of the start, especially considering how close times run at the Festival, and no other venues run this way. Guess I’m not seeing Phil Ellis this year on my day off.

I think I would live a healthier life in the UK because I like going to bookstores and game stores to buy stuff when I'm bored at night and most of them here are like "nope we closed at 3pm" On the other hand maybe I would just start drinking

There's actually a dissonance here between pop culture notions of gender and academic ideas (like from Judith Butler et al), but that's not worth hashing out here. The point is that Kanter has no intention of identifying as a woman and is therefore ineligible to play in the WNBA

The WNBA CBA says "only women can play in the WNBA". So if Enes Kanter wants to live and exist as a woman in the world, then Enes can play in the WNBA. If he is doing this as a stunt, and is not actually identifying as a woman, then he's ineligible to play, simple as

fringe is such bullshit, people cancel shows when they clearly aren't busy, like what else does this dude have going on that he bailed on this talk

Chris Grace @chrisgrace.com · 06/08/2026
because often critics are providing perspective about if a fan service movie would have any interest beyond the fandom... and if it's just for the fandom what do folks care about what critics say anyway?
110
Chris Grace @chrisgrace.com · 06/08/2026
disagree, and I find often tropes are used by genre-lovers to defend their genre when there are always exemplars in each genre that defy the tropes
100
Chris Grace @chrisgrace.com · 06/08/2026
completely disagree. I loved "Breaking Bad" because it was so unpredictable, linear, and avoided so many tropes of the genre it was nominally attached to... most of the things I love don't ring out tropes as waypoints in the narrative
000
Chris Grace @chrisgrace.com · 04/08/2026
i think pointing out that something is a trope in a movie as a criticism is fine because most of the time a critic is saying "this is a cliche and therefore predictable and boring"... eg it's okay to say things are boring
