On September 11, 2001 I was a young Congressional staff member on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee when we evacuated the Capitol. We would find out later it had been the target of the plane that passengers took down in a Pennsylvania field.

Reflecting on 25 years of second and third order effects. We knew the world changed that day; we are still discovering what that means.

There are so many lessons from Ukraine that should inform decisions about the types of Soldiers needed in a future war. Or we could continue basing our “ideal” warfighter image on outdated perceptions.

One of the perks of work travel is the occasional chance to be a tourist in a city I once called home and where I still believe we can find a path up this hill.

He obviously wrote it to be relevant to the current era. His argument is not that this is CW 2.0, but there are lessons in how we applied strategy across all of government.

I think the best comprehensive book is Brands’ edited “New Makers of Modern Strategy”, but if looking for a single book that examines strategic art in a single historical case across joint/interagency/alliance, and DIME constructs, I like his “The Twilight Struggle”. Great strategy avoids war.

Current events reminded me of a political button given to me by a previous boss, Congressman Phil Crane, when he was Chairman of the House Trade Subcommittee. Crane ran in the 1980 GOP presidential primary - to the RIGHT of Reagan. Just an observation on how political ideology has shifted.

Unfortunate for them. Proves the book is worth reading. I’ve been enjoying it. Hopefully this will stoke the students’ curiosity. Can’t stop them from reading.

Serving as a strategist at 21st Theater Sustainment Command has been an honor. Every day was a learning experience, improving how our #Army provides #logistics across #Europe, enabling allied support to #Ukraine, and working with our #NATO allies to deter Russsia. Onto the next challenge.

Day trip to another European country, another war cemetery. Honoring those whose fidelity to the principles of democracy and freedom motivated them to risk their lives for a greater good. A humbling reminder of the sacrifice of others.

For some reason, “Execution of Torrijos and his Companions on the Beach at Málaga” by Antonio Gisbert Pérez has been haunting my mind for the last several months. Standing up to authoritarianism is costly, but the right thing to do.

That is one of the things that angers me most of about this “debate”. Women serve valiantly, and die, for our country. They always have.

If we could set aside our own hubris, we would learn a lot from our allies. I was serving in Iraq & Syria when we (US, mostly men) were debating if women could wear ponytails in combat. Everywhere I looked badass women were demonstrating the stupidity of the question.

On the “standards” debate: I’ll point out all the “standards were lowered” arguments rely on a foundation of expecting higher levels of performance by women than the average man in those roles. I did the job as an Infantryman in combat. Most women I’ve seen in the Infantry are tougher than I was.
