Why would the UK be relevant at all here? We are a tiny market compared to the EU or USA or China. We have no real tech leadership. We might as well try and regulate life on Mars.

This would be the Schengen that is basically dead in Europe on land borders right now? Sure. In any case Schengen makes no sense to an island country. Even if the UK was in it back in the day you wouldn't get in without an ID check and security screening.

Rubbish. The EU would not insist on any of that. Schengen in particular is optional, the Euro practically optional. We wouldn't get our previous opt outs, but none of them actually mattered and some made our lives worse.

Nothing. I am sure Trump will however keep trying to do Putin's bidding. But he is almost out of time.

Russia has no diesel to export. So to that extent it is just fluff.

It is actually a good test for US tech, given how much they claim to be independent of the US government. Europe should blacklist any that comply with US sanctions.

2029, Trump will be in office in 2028, in 2029 America has either gone full dictatorship or MAGA is finished. Both are terminal for Putin and the UK far right.

The catastrophic event being they both run out of cash. Which will indeed be bad, but is inevitable.

It is a shame though because the SU7 is probably the best EV in the world and it would force EU and US manufacturers to raise their game. How is Polestar seen (being fundamentally Chinese).

Chris Gallon @chrisgallon.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The policy is rubbish, if you are going to impose a levy on Chinese cars then it should apply to all engines. All because Germany can't produce decent EVs at a sensible price.

It won't work. The fascist regimes will eventually collapse and America will get burned - again.

Probably the best defence is 20,000 long range ballistic missiles capable of reducing Russian cities to dust. Plus a few hundred deep bunker buster ICBMs targeted at Putin's hiding places. Unless we can produce a Patriot equivalent in volumes of 2000 a month defence is a busted flush.

It is a great strategy, just replace Kemi with David Gauke.... Oh.

There isn't much wrong with this if you police the members and don't care about coherent policy (unless you fix the motions themselves). If you don't do either of those precautionary things.....

Why are politicians and journalists so spectacularly clueless on AI? It is frustrating because of the questions that don't get asked. Here is mine, what exposure have UK banks and pensions firms got to the AI infrastructure bubble and how do we avoid another bailout when the inevitable happens.

Which is a weird opinion because third place in the mid term of a government screams more heading for extinction than power.

Austerity being famously popular with voters. This is their pitch?

AMS is the only sensible option for the UK, Burnham's proposal might be his preference but it won't fly. In any PR system you end up with coalition politics, especially if you consider Labour, Lib Dems, Greens and the Tories will likely all split into their respective wings.

There is more to it than Greece. If your economy is closely synced to the core it makes sense, the more it deviates the less sense it makes. The fact Poland hasn't joined yet (correctly in my view) suggests that it is not just an automatic thing and forcing countries to join is very unwise.
000
Chris Gallon @chrisgallon.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That is indeed a great answer. Nobody is letting you on to a boat or plane or a Euro tunnel train without security checks and ID, basic safety requires it.
110
Chris Gallon @chrisgallon.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Schengen doesn't make sense for island nations. It matters where you have borders lots of people cross every day. There are very good reasons for countries not to join the Euro and the lessons of Greece tell you why not every EU country should join.

Chris Gallon @chrisgallon.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That is definitely the case, and nothing Burnham as said and done remotely suggests he is capable.

Sounds more like the consequences of not having the guts to give Ed the job and instead giving it to the B team.

I will only believe that if he sacks Mahmood and Nandy. Because neither of them are in any way liberal.
000
Chris Gallon @chrisgallon.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Not really, in fact the Euro seems more optional over time as more peripheral states are added and making the UK a Schengen member while Ireland isn't might be fun.
100
Chris Gallon @chrisgallon.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Schengen isn't any sort of requirement, the Euro I am unsure of but, 20 years after joining the EU Poland is still not part of it.

It isn't strictly about the campaign. But I think Japan 1941 by Eri Hotta is absolutely essential reading to understand just how this insanity happened despite the entire Japanese ruling class being opposed to war on the basis they couldn't win.

Relax. This will just lead to ever more egregious and brain dead attacks on encryption while doing nothing to stop the far right online. I would so love to be wrong about this.

It hasn't been staged. A lot of rural crime is ignored by the police, but maybe if you are suspected of such activity near a secure base and someone tips off the cops then the police actually turn up and arrest what they think are terrorists only to find they aren't.

Chris Gallon @chrisgallon.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
All true, plus if we aren't inside the EU single market it is hopeless. That said if you were able to produce anti ballistic missile systems in massive volume you would become very rich.
010
Chris Gallon @chrisgallon.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I think an important lesson for all involved in nefarious late night activities. Don't carry out said activities next to an RAF base which is on mega terrorism alert.

Don't be ridiculous. There was no issue with freedom of movement before and there won't be in future. Stop pandering to racists.

We take too little tax at the bottom end and concentrate too much on a fairly small set of low-high earners (the rich are on another planet). A small tax increase at the lower tiers will raise enough money to fund a lot of services that will improve lives rather more than a small amount of cash.

Chris Gallon @chrisgallon.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
There will never be a cross party consensus. The answer is some sort of variation on Brown/Burnham original proposal pitched to the middle classes as an insurance scheme against your family losing everything. The wealthy will hate it because they always do.

Top marginal rate of tax in the UK is 62% which is 100K-125K although certain much less well off groups can also face eye watering tax rates if they get certain benefits (see Dan Neidle) taxpolicy.org.uk/2023/11/20/h...
taxpolicy.org.uk
The UK top marginal rate is a shocking 71%. Or even higher.
The UK’s high marginal tax rates on people earning £50k are a disincentive to work. They’re made worse by the way a large chunk of the tax is collected – the “high income child benefit charge” (HICBC)...

Classic French protectionism. There is quite a lot in it for the rest of Europe, just look at how FCAS turned out. The only viable option now relies on EU, UK and Japanese technology.

This is not AI going rogue, do better as journalists. It is a targeted hack by Open AI. They need to be prosecuted for this. AI has no agency or intelligence it does what it is instructed based on training and is presumably feeding an attack kit.

Wait until the SU7 turns up in Europe. What happens when a phone manufacturer gets an EV right (presumably with unlimited state support).
