I'm reluctant to speculate too much, but it does look like the absence of critical thinking is consistent. There doesn't seem to be any consideration of Māori philosophies of science in that area either.

It is still a significant improvement on the draft - which says something about how shocking the draft was - and I think it is probably something teachers can work with, but it's going to require considerable support from outside organisations who support critical and informed education.

Outside of History, the Civics and Society strand is bland, with no consideration of discrimination, poverty and other ways our systems fail people. No serious attention to climate change across the whole curriculum. No focus on power as a concept until Year 10.

NZ Wars are introduced like this: "Conflict grew because Māori and European settlers had different ideas about land, authority, and te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi". Educators have been trying to address the misconception the NZ Wars were caused by te Tiriti and this undoes all that.

This quote, from Year 8, gives an indication of how the cession of authority is assumed: "Some rangatira refused to sign, while others never had the opportunity. Neither refusal nor non–engagement resulted in the retention of authority for Māori, as the treaty was subsequently applied to all Māori"

Colonisation is just something that happened in 19th C., NZ Wars were a misunderstanding, rangatira who signed te Tiriti ceded their authority etc etc. It provides very limited opportunities for young people to critically engage with the world around them.

The final version of the Social Sciences curriculum was released yesterday. It probably won't surprise people to learn it presents a highly sanitised view of New Zealand history. 🧵

I’m not familiar with that research, curious to know how new uni students’ difficulties are attributed NCEA. I find 1st years have better academic skills than 15 years ago and miles better than what I had when I’d never been required to do any research in school - but that’s just anecdotal.

What’s the basis for the claim it didn’t prep students for further study? I think students are better prepared than I was under bursary and I don’t see students at uni who went to school overseas being any more prepared.

Completely absurd - but at the very least the closing comments imply the (redacted) substance of the responses was negative.

As the only specialist education reporter left I always appreciate Gerritsen's work, but this needs some distinction between curriculum and professional learning. It seems much of the benefit came from the professional learning connected to the Common Practice Model rather than the curriculum.

Better reading, maths results but two new curriculums a massive job - principals
Some said they focused on either the new maths or English curriculums, not both, and had more work to do next year.

The library at Waipapa Taumata Rau | UoA has all the recordings (and are in the process of digitising) and other materials, but particularly poignant is an outline of his proposed thesis. They're currently being exhibited: www.auckland.ac.nz/en/news/2025...

💯 but it's also heartbreaking because one of the things that came through clearly in my research and others' was the value in tauira Māori being able to connect histories learnt in school and at home

And some of it is just laughably bad. The "Global History" strand starts with the Stone Age is Year 2 and then just tells a history of the Western World picking up the next year where they left off.

(not another) Chris @chriscosmas.bsky.social · 28/10/2025
The complete elimination of the Understand strand (the "big ideas") also means there is no clear sense of how all this content fits together, which, I guess, is convenient if you don't want your overarching narrative (basically celebration of Western Civilization) to be explicit.

By ignoring the ways Te Tiriti was introduced to manage settler rule students can have no understanding of how and why the 1852 Constitution Act is such a profound breach of Te Tiriti.
1659
(not another) Chris @chriscosmas.bsky.social · 28/10/2025
The Te Tiriti content (which isn't introduced until Year 4) implies the English text was signed in Feb 1840, that the Māori text is a "translation", and that Te Tiriti was primarily a response to the Musket Wars. This is all nonsense.

One of the most striking features is how out of step it is with contemporary historical scholarship. If "knowledge rich" curricula are meant to centre the knowledge from communities of expertise than this curriculum fails by its own terms.

I'm reading the new Social Sciences curriculum content and I wasn't prepared for how sad I would feel. We spent thousands of hours working with the previous iteration and the NZ history content and all that enthusiasm and excitement was just killed for something so bad.

This year I've been teaching on the UoA Waipapa Taumata Rau course. It's been infuriating to see it attacked and misrepresented by ACT and NZ Herald. Alison Jones' piece gives a clear account of what it is, what it isn't, and why it should remain a requirement e-tangata.co.nz/comment-and-...

There’s so little information of what is actually changing (other than the names of things) it’s pretty safe to say that you will hate it, but time will tell how/why.

Sure, but I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with leftists thinking scrapping Epsom would be both funny and possibly bad for Labour. I just get a little tired of the "what the left don't understand is..." discourse.

It would be interesting to see what a sustained programme of this sort would look like. I have mixed feeling about the success of the programme Labour initiated in 2003, but not sure what lessons to take from it. Priority now is ensuring the school histories curriculum isn't dismantled this year.

In "oh shit, there's another Bill that requires a submission" news, feedback on the Social Security Amendment Bill closes JANUARY 10TH. Here's my (very quick) submission, and the link. www.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/mak...
(Screenshot) Submission on Social Security Amendment Bill.

Commitee: Social Services and Community Committee.

I/We wish to make the following comments:
"Being a beneficiary is difficult. It's not a position anyone particularly wants to be in, and leaving can be difficult. The lack of empathy for people in these proposed changes is astoundingly cruel. Punitive approaches don't work, and I stand opposed to all proposed changes."
I/We wish to make the following recommendations:
"In 2019, the Welfare Expert Advisory Group made a range of recommendations for improving the social welfare system. I recommend you implement those."
