I’m used to covering soccer games inside baseball stadiums. Today I’m covering a soccer game in a football stadium. The two MLS clubs with brand new soccer-specific stadiums on the horizon are at the half.

Additional context on potential impacts to NYCFC from Man City. Here is an ownership chart I've obtained, tracing NYCFC and Etihad Park all the way back to the top. The entity in pink, CFG (Midco) Limited, is where Manchester City (and other CFG clubs and operations) are held.

I found this (quite long) article from @aarontimms.bsky.social at the @nyreviewofarch.bsky.social quite compelling surrounding the dichotomy of Etihad Park providing a home for its passionate fanbase and squeezing out every dollar it can. (also, the art is dope)

New York City FC has a real problem closing games out. Goal Differential by 15 minute breaks: 1-15: +4 16-30: +4 31-45: +6 46-60: +3 61-75: -2 76-90: -5

Press Release: NYCFC Signs Joāo Loiola to a Short-Term Agreement from NYCFC II. I wouldn't be surprised if Loiola started tonight's match. I asked Todd Dunivant if the League's Cup was one of the opportunities that he had identified to get him minutes with the first team and this was his response:

Interesting response from Malachi Jones today on how playing with Nico Fernandez Mercau at the 10 vs the 9 impacts Malachi's role and how he wants to play. Noted the opportunity to now stay wide and take fullbacks one-on-one vs having to fill in centrally.

Great breakdown from Paul here highlighting Jansen’s prioritizing safe possession instead of taking risks in the attack. The front 6 I’d most like to see given the current roster (but obviously current injuries are now a factor):

This movement between Nico Fernandez and Maxi is wonderful to see. Maxi recognizes the deep run from Nico, so moves towards the ball to pull the center back with him to create more space for the ball over the top, then curls back at the right moment to support

I'm not quite sure how this did not result in a card, let alone even a foul call. If a player challenging late with their feet can result in a card, then why doesn't the same apply with the head? This should have been, at minimum, a yellow card and a FK. Arguably red.

I'd really like to see Agustin Ojeda take a first-time crack at these opportunities instead of laying it off. He had it on his preferred right foot and opted to lay it off instead. Reminded me of when Malachi Jones was presented a similar opportunity last season...

Tayvon Gray doesn’t do nearly enough to block the run here, but ultimately Bakrar has to win that ball. Completely misjudged it and allows the free header. Just a lack of focus from Gray and Bakrar to see this out into extra time.
