Pleased to see my book on sale at Newcastle Library next to one about the great local hero Thomas Bewick. Hope he would have liked the cover image of small boy falling in love with football as stadium and angel loom #football #bewick

'No complacency' is what I used to message my son Ewan when our team Newcastle took the lead - and then began to defend. It became a motto for football, and life, as his illness worsened. Now, after his death, it's the title of the book I've written about keeping the faith, whatever happens #england

Deeply ironic story brewing if VW close Zwickau factory in face of Chinese competition. Once home of Trabi then meant to symbolise united German prosperity in electro-mobility era. I found pro petrol populists mobilising #vw @johnsimpsonnews.bsky.social www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Thank you Henry Corbett for this review of my book "for those who would like a window into the world of football together with profound insights into grief, community, and the changes in our world in the past 50 years"

Viewpoint with Chris Bowlby: Football and religion can benefit each other
FOR me, as for many fans of a certain age, watching the World Cup kick off last week in the Azteca stadium, in Mexico City, brought back powerful memories. In 1970, as an eight-year-old, I watched TV, transfixed, as a brilliant Brazilian team won ...

Every June 17th I think of the uprising in East Germany in 1953. Much less known than Hungary in 1956 or Czechoslovakia in 1968 but the first time brave Cold War Europeans confronted Soviet tanks @johnkampfner.bsky.social @coldwarpod.bsky.social

Maybe World Cup hydration breaks are a cunning attempt to prepare us for the time when, as data centres and climate change kick in and insufficient reservoirs empty, we'll all be allowed 3 minutes of drinking water in every 45? @msidouglas.bsky.social @sascampaigns.bsky.social

Wrote this as a kind of continuation of the running conversation I had with my son Ewan before he died. About what football has meant to me, and him, and the people and world around us. Looking forward to hearing what readers think.
