It was immediately taken away from me. The simple fact is, they had no idea this was in the collection. I never saw it again. And that would have ended my story but they took pity on a kid just trying to make a History Day display and the went and made copies of the map.

and then I remembered. I had read a historical rumor that they couldn't find accurate maps of France prior to D-Day, but what they did find was a Napoleon map of France. Unsure if this is what I was looking at I called a curator over to look at it. I guess I was right as the curator looked shocked.

Well, not a book. Think of it more like the shell on collection of books and then something inside of it. I pulled it out and it was folded canvas. I unfolded it on the table and cut into neat little squares we pieces of map, each adhered to the canvas. I had no idea what this was...

What I needed was a map of France. Kids, this was 1988 and long before Google. So I pulled references for everything that was map related. There was a simplified Michelin map but it was from the 50s and didn't really help. I sent it back and next came a white paper box, Inside a book.

Topekan, Sherman Oyler, (a completely different story) visited our class and told his story about parachuting in on June 6th. So being a kid in Kansas, the best place to research D-Day was in Abilene KS, the home of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. I went to a research room.

On this anniversary of D-Day I thought I'd share an odd story about a missing object and how it ended up in the hands of high school senior. I was fascinated with WWII and in my history class I decided to do a History Day display on D-Day.
