"The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage" is also solid.

WHOA this is slander against the golden era of emo rock music. Panic! at the Disco's first album has some all-time titles, for example: There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of It Yet

speaking of unsatisfying endings, I just finished Thomas Pynchon's latest and it just sort of...ends. But given how much he's indebted to James Joyce, I get it. Ulysses is one of the all-time unsatisfactory endings.

did you ever see the movie Looper? There's a moment in it where the character is trying to understand the mechanics and the other guy is like "just...accept this." I loved the "shut up nerds" energy. Also Mandel is great! Station Eleven is also excellent

last year I read John Maynard Keynes' General Theory on Interest and Employment and I can't understand the US tax code. I use TurboTax and pray

BookTok is a big thing! Go do BookTok! (I've been mostly off of Bluesky for weeks but get sucked in periodically)

I lived most of my life in Georgia or Los Angeles. Also, NYC in winter is bleak as hell. Snow makes it magical. It's rough to get through with zero snow
010
Chris in DC @chrisb2.bsky.social · 28/01/2026
that feels a little out of your wheelhouse!

Chris in DC @chrisb2.bsky.social · 28/01/2026
NYC went 2 winters (600+ days) without measurable snowfall (usually meaning at least half an inch). I was *big mad* about it

the guests at Mar-a-Lago are now dictating US foreign policy. This whole thing is pissy Cuban/Venezuelan expats with 1960s memories of "socialism"

Rubio was the architect of the whole thing. This is all designed to get to Cuba

Trump's superpower is forcing Democrats to defend indefensible positions. He's absolutely going to try and make this "Democrats love socialism and cartels." DWS is staking a position of "Maduro bad, illegal regime change also bad"

hilariously Clancy wrote Clear and Present Danger in the mid-90s about similar ideas.

Trump is ultimately a figurehead who says what he has to to win votes. I don't think he's driving the policy agenda himself as much as people think. Miller might be worse.

in a world where it's Tesla Model S vs...some shitty gas car, sure. Now there's an electric Mercedes-Benz for the same price but with all the high-end German shit Mercedes is known for. The S feels middle class comparatively

Musk is a great example of the adage "it's better to be first than to be better." Tesla had an elite product and stopped innovating for a decade while companies with significantly more manufacturing resources decided to catch up

it's because of the solstice! Days are getting longer from 12/21 onward. We celebrate "the sun isn't actually slowing blacking out." Then we tolerate the bitter cold because the sun is still there.

meanwhile in Spain you have Madrid, Andalucia, the Basque Region, Catalunya...Belgium has 3 distinct regions with 3 separate languages. Germany also has a north/south divide between Berlin and Munich. None of the tribalism is uniquely American

oh...oh boy. In short: yes, this exists basically everywhere. But German is its own thing because it was 2 separate countries for decades. East Germany is still *very* different politically than West Germany.

OL is the most important position group in football. Not hard to find a fast shifty running back. Hard to find a 350 lb guy who can pancake a dude, much less 5 of them.

I don't use OMNY, just my tap-to-pay credit card. Why OMNY exists as a middle-man is beyond me. DC Metro now has tap-to-pay without any service in the middle

I'd make fun of NYC needlessly clinging to something outdated out of nostalgia but that's like 30% of NYC's economy

the one shining moment to remove Trump from present/future office was J6, when his power was at an all-time low and the GOP's independence was at an all-time high. McConnell misjudged the moment and here we are.

the wild part is all of the cognitive dissonance. "Sure he believes he has ultimate, unlimited power, but that's just how drunks talk." This is the battered-wife syndrome Marjorie Taylor Greene was talking about. "He doesn't DO retribution, except for those few times he did."

8.8 seems high? I feel like it was around 8.4 at the last census and has held steady. But density is also a thing. London might have a smaller geographic footprint.

Trump is super German and his family taught him the only absolute is power. He never experienced paternal love. So he's accumulated power to impress his dead father who never loved him. It's somehow not more complicated than that
