No one should feel scared to exist in this country. We need guardrails on DHS and ICE, and elected officials who will enforce them. In this country that I love, we stand up for our rights and each other. We can choose compassion over cruelty, and humanity over fear. #BeGood

For the first time in my life, I donated to the American Academy of Pediatrics. They’re upholding evidence-based health standards for our kids and our communities, and they’re losing federal grants because of it. www.aap.org/en/philanthr...

With the world being what it is I need Google to tell this little turtle something more comforting
Hey little one, your mommy turtle’s job was done when she laid you and your brothers and sisters so she’s probably far away in the water and you won’t see her again. You’re meant to be on your own, to find your own food and water, but if you’re near a pond or ocean, crawl towards the waters edge and let yourself swim in!

#WorldAIDSDay
A screenshot of a FB post:

When I started my clinical training, I twice rotated through an HIV service.

Hospitals used to have whole wards and inpatient teams dedicated to the care of patients with HIV/AIDS. Because there were so many of them, and they would come in very very sick. Many would die during their hospitalization. I can recall minute details of the patients I cared for on those services, because I spent so much time feeling helpless and afraid for them.

Twenty years later, those services don't exist.

Because a deep investment in federal research led to transformative, highly effective, well tolerated treatments.

Because in the U.S., the treatments were made broadly accessible through Medicaid and HIV public assistance programs.

Because there rose up a generation of primary care and infectious disease docs and APPs who dedicated themselves to the care of patients with HIV. (These folks — as far as I can tell from my vantage point in the ER — seem to attach themselves to their patients with the tenacity of a barnacle. Their patients feel CARED for, CONNECTED.)

On #WorldAIDSDay, I wanted to honor the trifecta of science, public insurance, and primary care that transformed this disease.

Prone used when contextually, they mean supine. (Prone is a relatively odd position for an awake person who is hanging out, chatting, being alluring, etc.)

I’m an ER doc who has responded to hundreds of events like this in the hospital & on planes and other public spaces. The right side of this photo is like exhibit A of normal human behavior in these circumstances. People rush to help so instinctively that part of the skill of a code is crowd control.
An elderly man has had a syncope event and everyone else in the room rushed over to help. The president stands facing the camera without apparent curiosity or empathy about the event.

The headlines are freaking out but *nothing* about EMTALA itself is rescinded. EMTALA enforces the most basic of emergency care tenets. We will assess and stabilize because that is what we do.

Hey man, I'm having a hard time picturing this "rainbow" thing you mentioned seeing. Oh, well, just picture the black line where you sign your name on a DMV form, that's basically it. OK, got it.

This manages to be simultaneously deranged and also not visually evocative in the least. It's like somebody sniffed glue and hallucinated the normal contents of a desk drawer.

Well, see, over here, to the south, you got a thread. It lacks stitches. And boy, that thread is really hauling ass. In this sense, it will remind you of a floater. And then if you'll turn around and look over there to the north, you got your classic execution line on a document, the only way that the concept of straightness could be represented for the reader.

Esther Choo @choo.bsky.social · 23/11/2024
This is a 172-car pileup of mixed visual metaphors. What is the damn lightning (which bobs and weaves like a ... a floater) doing, racing the storms? Are you sure that it is racing them? It is racing them ... in a thread? A thread without stitches? Buddy, what the fuck is happening in the sky right now.

Esther Choo @choo.bsky.social · 23/11/2024
While we are on the subject of nature, here is an entire paragraph, one of two about lightning in the story:

It’s monsoon season, and lightning bobs and weaves in the corner of your eyes all day like floaters. There are three separate storms to the south, delicately wind-tilted on the horizon. Lightning races them in a stitchless thread, and to the north rain shimmers through the sheerest rainbow, stamped perfectly horizontal against the mountains like the execution line on a document.
