Eito Aotsuki, burdened by his cognitive disorder which causes him to view humans as disgusting monsters, initially takes interest in Kudzu Shimoda because she smells like paper. Pleasant to him compared to the stench which humans usually carry in his perception. Every once in a while in his peripheral vision, Eito catches glimpses of Kudzu's true appearance, a human just like him, and begins to perceive her as a cute girl.

Eito's curiosity is piqued when he learns about Kudzu’s secret hobby as an illustrator. He finds her outlook on art unexpected and interesting. Eito sees humanity as destructive and driven by conquest, but Kudzu just draws the things that she wants to see, for no particular audience and for nothing in return. He becomes obsessed with Kudzu, wanting to know more about her and spend time near her in the hopes of pursuing her romantically.

Kudzu, meanwhile, is completely overwhelmed by Eito's fondness for her. She’s in denial that someone like Eito would actually be interested in an otaku girl like herself and tries not to get her hopes up. After learning that he can recognize her “paper” scent, Kudzu becomes self-conscious and tries to avoid him for a while. Eito remains persistent and continues trying to impress her, and Kudzu comes to realize that he is being completely genuine. As a result, she begins to love Eito and his eccentricities.
