#newwest activists against supportive housing are at it again. They plan to be outside City Hall on the 7, 8, 9, and 10th from 4:30 to 5pm (I guess I’m late sharing this). Sorry, no alt text for this wall of misinformation and fear-mongering.

At the western edge of #NewWest there is a bush with a strange expression. Is it friend? It is dead end #ConnaughtHeights

BC parkway traces the perimeter of #ConnaughtHeights following the route of the Skytrain Expo line and extending from Commercial Drive to King George. It’s a peaceful place to walk, bike or run. #NewWest

I’m inspired this morning to start a photo thread about #ConnaughtHeights. The neighbourhood so unassuming that even #NewWest fanatics forget about it. The first images are my favourite house and garden. It’s hard to pick the best view because the property is Art.
Drooping cedar tree creates dramatic arch at the entrance stair to the property. A modern bungalow with a rounded corner is framed beyond. To the top right corner you can spot a tree pruned to look like a tree from The Lorax.A very well maintained art deco bungalow with a flat roof, rounded corners, and chrome trims. If you zoom in you can see a tree near the entrance is pruned into a tight coil. In the foreground there is a cheap wood fence that doesn’t belong. What is the story behind the fence???

My god, text from the petition 👇 BC Housing is fully working with suggestions 1 & 2 in the approach to this project
Screenshot from petition

‘The government's intent to tackle homelessness and addiction is commendable, yet the approach must ensure the safety of existing neighborhoods and the effective rehabilitation of those in need. As concerned residents, we propose alternative solutions, such as:

1. Establishing the shelter in a more suitable location, away from residential areas, to minimize the direct impact on families and vulnerable community members.
2. Implementing rigorous supervision and strict regulations to manage substance use, emphasizing rehabilitation and support.
3. Increasing transparency and communication between BC Housing and the affected communities to keep citizens informed and involved in decision-making processes.

I wrote an email to the mayor and council in New Westminster to support the proposed Tiny Homes Village for our homeless neighbours. You can read the letter in my alt text. Please feel free to write your own to mayorandcouncillors@newwestcity.ca
Dear mayor and councillors,

Last week I received a pamphlet in my mailbox from a group called ‘Oppose NW Drug Site What’d App Group’ regarding this project. I was appalled that anyone would put so much effort into preventing homeless people from getting safe and secure shelter. I live a few blocks up the hill from the proposed site, and I am writing to express my support for this project.

I first heard about the project a few weeks ago and thought the location was odd. I was concerned that the site was too far from anything, being at the end of a dead end street sandwiched between a dangerous high-traffic road and the river. I thought the location might be a hardship for people who might not own cars, and especially if they had health issues that would limit their mobility. I joked with my friends that ‘I support housing the homeless, but this is the wrong location’. When I read about the on-site services to help people meet their daily needs these concerns were quelled and I felt proud of my City for being leaders in housing our most vulnerable neighbours.

I don’t think opposition to drug-use is a valid argument against this project. For starters, drug-use exists across the income spectrum. Secondly, not all homeless people use drugs. Thirdly, ‘housing first’ as opposed to ‘treatment first’ has been proven as a more effective approach to reducing substance abuse https://www.utoronto.ca/news/housing-first-more-effective-treatment-first-addressing-addiction-homelessness-study

I hope the organized opposition does not discourage you from pursuing this important and potentially life-saving project. I’m excited to see it move ahead.

I got this bullshit fearmongering flyer in my mailbox. “Oppose NW Drug Site” WhatsApp group 😡 For what it’s worth, I live within the mapped area and I support this project. I will be certain to email the City and attend the community info session to prevent these clowns from drowning out reason

It’s a weird location. Technically near the skytrain, but not easily reached by foot.

Today started with a beautiful hike; followed by the first lawn mow of the year; then 4 thrift stores in DTNW with my kid. Pretty much a perfect Saturday.
Jug Island, in Belcarra, looking into Indian Arm I think. It’s a beautiful sunny day with blue skies and calm water.

Apparently municipal election campaigning starts a year in advance in #newwest. I got a door knock and an invitation to meet the NWP mayoral candidate at an upcoming townhall. TBH it was inappropriate and annoying.

I really like the new logo: - celebrates labour - reminds me of the annual tugboat parade - replaces a god-damn crown I wasn’t sold on the typeface immediately, but I’m warming up to it. The hardness of the N and W is an aggressive contrast to the soft waves. But NW is a city with intense contrasts
New logo for New Westminster features a tugboat on top of abstract waves that also resemble fish or paddles

The Christmas movie you didn’t know you were missing, ‘Babes in Toyland’ (1986) starring Keanu Reeves, Drew Barrymore, and Pat Morita (yes, Mr. Miyagi). As if that wasn’t enough, they sing! It’s terrible and hokey and naive and weirdly charming.
