Because the program I use lacks the ability to create “color to transparent” gradients, I use a very round-about method when shading large areas; where I create a black to white gradient and then use the layer properties to “convert to outline” which turns all the white areas transparent.

Left, original diaper pattern.

Two paw print details highlight the diapers size. On the front, a young sabertooth cat frolics in the snowy pine forest. Following the fade when wet paw prints from below him, the snow melts to reveal a bubbling tar pit on the back, decorated with a saber tooth skull and other playful fossils.

Right, 4 variations of the above pattern. Each an exploration of brining the design to market.

V1 The skull and tar pit removed for the sabertooths tail poking out of a layered dirt “wall”. Leaves claws and ammonite shells replace the fossils. The trim keeps the tar motive by being a dark purple wavey edge.

V2 is variation of V1, with the wall removed for a rounded “modern” design around the tail and light blue icy layered sides. The trim keeps the tar motive by being a dark purple wavey edge.

V3 is V2 but the tar trim is removed.

V4 an entirely new design taking a very modern approach. A soft blue and grey design, alternates in wavy stripes. White fossils decorate the ice. A white core clearly shows the fade when wet prints following all the way to the back.
