On Saturday, Sable flipped the switch to turn on the same oil pipeline that ruptured more than 10 years ago on the Gaviota Coast—the pipeline that caused one of California’s worst oil disasters in history. And the same pipeline that the State Fire Marshal told Sable is not safe to restart. Sable’s restart follows an order issued on Friday by the Trump Administration under the Defense Production Act demanding the company restart production and claiming its exempt from California state laws regulating pipeline safety and usage.Sable’s history of unpermitted work on the pipeline — in open violation of cease-and-desist orders by the California Coastal Commission — resulted in the largest CCC fine in history ($18 million). The Santa Barbara County District Attorney also charged the company with multiple crimes, including five felony charges.“This is bigger than any one oil project. Anyone who cares about state sovereignty, law and order, and our environment should be outraged,” Linda Krop, EDC Chief Counsel.A defective pipeline operating at high pressure with no legal guardrails is a threat to public safety, to our economy, and to the entire coast. This has nothing to do with gas prices or the military. What we’re seeing is the abuse of power and a corruption of federal law for the benefit of the president’s friends with potentially disastrous consequences for everyone else. Trump’s action undermines the right of California and every state to protect its own environment. The resumption of production restores the single largest source of greenhouse gases in Santa Barbara County at a time when we clearly need to transition to renewable energy sources.EDC is exploring all options to challenge this blatantly unlawful order.Read more at the link in our bio. 🔗
