It's just overlap, 手工 emphasizes the 'by hand' aspect (which fits the literal etymology of manual too) and 人工 as in 人工检查 is a 'by human' inspection.

Oh absulutely AI is called AI in Chinese most of the time.

I admit I do get a little weirded out when the alternative to something done by AI (人工智能) is a manual (人工) option. But when I mention this to native speakers, they pat me on the head like when I talk about how clever it was to call Coke 可口可乐。

This article suggests a conceptual difference between Chinese and English understanding of AI because: 1. Artificial = fake 2. 人工智能 = Man-crafted intelligence (not fake) And I'm no linguist, but... what do they think the art in artificial means? @bokane.org

What’s in a name? Trump calls it ‘SI’. China calls it ‘human-made’
While the term AI dates back to 1956, the Chinese version offers a different take on the relationship between humans and intelligent machines.

Two things made 80s movies great: 1. Original concepts- not reboots, franchises. 2. Being played over and over again on VHS and cable channels, with minimal alternatives, until they were burned so deeply into your cortex that they became inseparable from your actual memories.

I wonder if the US Lawmakers who 'condemn' the plan to livestream the execution even remember they can pass legislation to stop it. Short, simple half-page bill. Leave the sentence intact, prohibit broadcast and transmission.

Infographic titled “Conceiving Death,” subtitled “Changing Models of U.S. Death Penalty.” Five illustrated sections arranged vertically:

Public & Religious Execution. 1600s–early 1800s. The community witnesses punishment, repentance and a lesson in salvation. Illustration: a crowd gathered before a gallows.

Execution Behind Walls. 1830–1860 in the North; later in the South. Executions move into jail yards. Announcements replace collective witnessing. Illustration: a closed prison gate and a posted notice.

Technological Execution. Late 1800s–early 1900s. Modern science and industrial machinery promise an objective, efficient and humane method of killing. First electrocution: 1890. First lethal-gas execution: 1924. Illustration: an electric chair and gas chamber.

Medicalized Execution. Late 1970s onward. Execution adopts the trappings of medical care, emphasizing comfort, cleanliness and minimal suffering. Lethal injection adopted: 1977. First used: 1982. Illustration: a restrained gurney and intravenous apparatus.

Content Execution? The social media era. Execution packaged as shareable political messaging for diverse audiences. Brutality is equated with dominance and authority; restraint is cast as weakness. The image is the event; the audience, a distribution network. Illustration: a phone showing a firing squad facing a prisoner, connected to three smaller screens displaying the same scene.

Police were already able to punish petition-related violations and crimes, including "serious disruptive" or "persistent" petitioning. Art. 6 allows them to join in agencies' education and guidance earlier, and absent a violation or crime, blurring the line between law enforcement and bureaucracy.
010
China Law Translate / Jeremy Daum @chinalawtranslate.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Article 6 similarly says that repeated petitions on matters still being handled, or already 'resolved' will now not be registered (登记), further counted in statistics, or circulated to other departments. An exclusion that means ongoing grievances could become administratively invisible.

China Law Translate / Jeremy Daum @chinalawtranslate.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
What's new in article 4 is not a bar on going straight to Beijing, but a documentary barrier. Without documentary proof from the lower level, which might simply refuse to issue anything, petitions will not only not be 'accepted for handling' (受理) but won't even be registered (登记) in the system.

China Law Translate / Jeremy Daum @chinalawtranslate.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
What's most interesting here is somewhat subtler than the article suggests. Requiring petitioners to first seek relief at lower levels has been the law for years, duplicative petitions have long been rejected rather than accepted for handling, and the new rules introduce no new punitive measures.

Pete Hegseth appoints Elon Musk to US taskforce on future of warfare
A year after his explosive tenure at Doge, the SpaceX CEO is back in the Trump administration’s good graces Pete Hegseth announced on Wednesday that Elon Musk will co-lead a government project to study the future of warfare, marking the SpaceX CEO’s first return to government since he ran the chaotic, so -called “department of government efficiency”, or Doge. Musk will be joined by Palmer Luckey, CEO of the defense tech company Anduril, and Newt Gingrich, the former Republican speaker of the House. A defense department press release on the effort, called Project Meridian, described its goal as “identifying the capabilities required to achieve absolute technological dominance on the next-generation battlefield”. The project will run for 120 days and culminate in an unclassified public report of its recommendations. Continue reading...
