2026 watch #172 - Toy Story 5 - No physical media window means Toy Story 5 is already on Disney+ 3 months from release. The trilogy was a perfectly good time to stop, but like Forky from 4, there is a good reason to watch 5: Smarty Pants, the potty-training device voiced by Conan O'Brien. #filmsky

2026 watch #171 - The Purge: Anarchy (2014). John Carpenter Assault on Precinct 13-inspired sequel, expanding the purge sandbox that everyone seemed to crave. It’s fine for what it is. Frank Grillo is the stand out- he could be in so many better movies if given half a chance. #filmsky

Frank Grillo is the ex-cop whose night for revenge is derailed by a couple of idiots who think leaving it to the last minute to get home on a night like this is a good idea.

I believe this one’s called Big Daddy. Not to be confused with the British wrestler from the 1980’s.

2026 watch #170 - Mother (2009). Bong Joon Ho’s themes and motifs are all here as a mother fights for her son accused of murder: society’s underbelly, incompetent authority figures & of course the darkest comedy. Not as slick as Parasite, not as interesting as Memories of Murder, still good #filmsky

2026 watch #156 - Halloween (1978). Carpenter brings all the best horror elements together to launch the suburban slasher. One thing always bothers me: streets are awful quiet for Halloween, even kids at Myers house aren’t trick-or-treating. But I’m nitpicking, it’s a near perfect slasher. #filmsky

2026 watch #155 - My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999). Lesser known Studio Ghibli directed by lesser known co-founder Isao Takahata - due to his films being more adult-orientated and less fantastical. Yamadas is a film full of whimsical vignettes about everyday life… and it’s hilarious. #filmsky

2026 watch #148 - Clue (1985). Timeless classic and multiple rewatch. If you haven’t seen it, it has almost as many jokes as Airplane or Naked Gun, a stellar cast, and a performance from Tim Curry that is second only to Frank-n-Furter. DO NOT STOP as the credits are about to roll!

2026 watch #144 - 1941 (1979). Nothing quite prepares you for how poor this Spielberg comedy is, but maybe it exists so that we could have a Spielberg who learned what excess can do to a director. The script is awful, the only redeeming features are the plane chase and the Williams score #filmsky

2026 watch #143 - Rules of Living (2024). A foreigner takes a trip to Japan on a whim and falls in with a lonely woman. A very simple tale, economically told, with a few cliches. The script for the most part is well written, though, and the Japanese cast save it from being too amateurish. #filmsky

2026 watch #142 - Marty Supreme (2025). A sports biopic but not what you expect from a sports biopic until you realise who made it, and then it’s exactly what you’d expect from Josh Safdie! A chaotic, relentless, messy ride that has your teeth on edge, like watching a terrier not give up its ball.

Excellent break out role for Odessa A'zion.
