Last month’s BRICS Summit marked the high point of a broader reset in China-India relations. With bilateral and international ties now on firmer footing, Beijing and New Delhi must think regionally, argues @chietigj.bsky.social in his latest for @foreignpolicy.com.

(5/5) India's engagement with the Middle East - noted by its participation in the #I2U2 and #IMEC - were built on the US-led regional architecture in the Middle East. But as US claims of forging a “New Middle East” falters, India needs to rethink its approach towards West Asia.
000
Chietigjb @chietigj.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
(4/5) The pact has implications beyond the region as faultlines in South Asia and West Asia become more intertwined. A key watchpoint will be to see what position Saudi Arabia and Turkey take during future India-Pakistan hostilities. This comes as India deepens relations with Israel and the UAE.
100
Chietigjb @chietigj.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
(3/5) Despite the hype (e.g. “Sunni NATO”), there are numerous ambiguities in the pact. It is unlikely to strengthen collective deterrence against any of the member states’ primary strategic adversaries: Iran, Israel, or India. This will limit cohesion and interoperability between its members.
100
Chietigjb @chietigj.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
(2/5) Key watchpoints will be to see if the pact holds (given the highly fluid geopolitics of the Middle East); its operationalization (e.g. joint command structures); if membership expands to other countries (e.g. Egypt) and the role it plays in regional flashpoints (from Sudan to Yemen).
100
Chietigjb @chietigj.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
(1/5) The pact comes at a time when confidence in the US-led security architecture in the #MiddleEast is waning. This has prompted efforts to develop more diversified security guarantees, in this case with Pakistan's nuclear weapons, Turkey's defence-industrial base and Saudi Arabia's economic heft.

(6/6) Given the difficulties of collective action, the real action at the BRICS Summit could take place on its side-lines. In particular, Chinese President Xi Jinping's attendance at this year’s summit is a sign of further confidence building in the #China-India relationship.

Chietigjb @chietigj.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
(5/6) BRICS was established amid calls for reforming global multilateral institutions with a greater voice for the Global South. But given the struggle of speaking with one voice, more exclusive regional groupings could eventually challenge more expansive and inclusive groupings like the BRICS.
100
Chietigjb @chietigj.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
(4/6) This is fuelled by the challenge of maintaining cohesion among the 11 BRICS member states amid frictions (Iran-UAE/ Saudi-UAE/Egypt-Ethiopia/China-India) and lack of consensus on what the BRICS stands for beyond calls for a more equitable distribution of power in a multipolar global order.
100
Chietigjb @chietigj.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
(3/6) India wants to promote a benign worldview – reflected in the BRICS slogan of ‘Humanity First’ – and return the forum to its original development-focused agenda. However, this threatens to be hijacked by broader geopolitical developments, such as US military actions against Venezuela and Iran.
101
Chietigjb @chietigj.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
(2/6) India seeks to be a “voice” of the #GlobalSouth but it wants to promote a worldview that is non-western, not anti-western. For instance, as BRICS chair India is seeking to downplay the de-dollarization narrative, which has incurred the wrath of the Trump administration.
100
Chietigjb @chietigj.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
(1/6) At a time when strategic hedging and middle-power diplomacy have become catchphrases of international relations, the rest of the world is echoing India’s strategic autonomy. But there are underlying contradictions in this approach, which will become evident during the upcoming BRICS Summit

(5/5) India’s efforts to promote a more benign worldview that is non-western but not anti-western is more difficult to sustain when US military action against Venezuela and Iran fuels perceptions of the #GlobalSouth being under siege from the Washington’s ‘might is right’ approach.

(4/5) The Iran conflict‌ raises questions about India’s ambitions to be a “voice” of the #GlobalSouth as New Delhi chairs the #BRICS this year. The BRICS includes several countries that have been at loggerheads (Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia). This undermines its ability to speak with one voice
100
