In March our animated short film Loneliness & Laundry won 4 awards(!!!): – the Grand Prize & Tokyo Governor's Award at Tokyo Anime Award Festival, plus – the Lottie Reiniger Award for Innovation & Audience Award at the British Animation Film Festival "Overwhelmed" doesn’t even begin to cover it 🙈

A photograph of several items laid out in a sunny patch of grass. There are two black awards shaped like lions, a festival programme for the British Animation Film Festival open to the page for Loneliness & Laundry, two filmmaker passes for Jonny Eveson and Lindsey Williams, and a Polaroid picture of Jonny and Lindsey at the event.

A photograph of Chicken Fruit director Jonny Eveson and producer Lindsey Williams on stage at Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2025. Jonny is holding a glass award: the Grand Prize for the short film Loneliness & Laundry. Both of them are laughing, clearly in shock at winning an award.

Merry Christmas from the Chicken Fruit team: art director Jonny, producer Lindsey, and our lonely laundry-loving Tabitha 🎄🧣🧤 Whatever you’re up to this week, we hope you have a good one! Lots of love 💜

A Christmas card from the Chicken Fruit team. It’s pink with a white snow border. It shows Jonny, Lindsey and Tabitha sitting on a sofa preparing for Christmas. Jonny (in a 3D style) is squishing a Loneliness & Laundry poster into a tube. Lindsey (in a painted style) is writing a label for a present. Tabitha (in flat colour and sketchy lines) is trimming a ribbon. Around them are DVD boxes for Loneliness & Laundry (the short film we made this year) (Tabitha is the main character).

Elements from our first project using Forger + the final image 🍂 We sculpted these, painted over them in Procreate, and streamed the whole process on Twitch. Two firsts (the sculpting and the streaming) and one Very Not First (painstakingly painting over 3D objects) 😅

Several painted sculpted 3D elements on a sky blue background. The elements are laid out in a regular pattern: two acorns, a twig, a brown oak leaf, a cross-section of a tree trunk, a red flat cap, a wooden sign with “OPEN” painted on it and a menu board offering acorns and pine cones (the pine cones are sold out).

A painted squirrel in a little red flat cap perched in the hollow of a tree, which is decorated to look like a shop front. There is snow on the tree and fairy lights around the shop roof. Two signs either side of the squirrel read OPEN and MENU. On the MENU sign are drawings of an acorn and a pine cone. The pine cone is sold out.

There is art inspo everywhere for those with eyes to see 🐿️

A real photo of a squirrel in the hollow of a tree. He’s got little paws and he looks like he wants to offer you his wares, but he lacks the linguistic ability to do so.

The same photo as before, just closer – a squirrel in the hollow of a tree. He’s got little paws and he looks like he wants to offer you his wares, but he lacks the linguistic ability to do so.

This little rice cooker animation took us a week. At the time we were like "oh my goddd that took SO LONG haha good job we don't work in 2D very much." Then we made a 10-minute film using this very technique! It took us four years! lmao 🤡

Oh actually maybe THIS was the first project where we tried the #2Danimation thing?

130

Chicken Fruit animation studio @chickenfruit.studio · 12/11/2024

This was one of the first projects where we tried to cheat our way to #2Danimation by making it in 3D first. We did not move on from this technique for many years 😔
