"Musk does not just sell cars, rockets, or satellites. He sells the fantasy that, in an increasingly unstable world, both states and individuals can fortify their self-reliance by plugging into his infrastructures. The paradox is that, in doing so, you become reliant on him.”

Slobodian ends with an unconventional point: the hubris and chainsaw-man logic of the B-class will be their own undoing. Fordism needed to compromise with labor under industrial capitalism; Muskism derides labor under digital capitalism — at it’s own expense.

3. A “Billionaire Class Consciousness” congeals. Disciplining and dominating high demand tech labor (coder etc) become acceptable. 4. GenAI gains traction as a viable way to de-leverage and de-skill software dev and other white collar sectors. Or as Musk puts it: DELETE, AUTOMATE, INTEGRATE.

1. Higher interest rates and the cost of credit after the pandemic led to slashing and mass layoffs despite tech labor union wins. 2. Tech leadership increasingly parried to the right as Trump 2.0 gained speed in the platformed content wars.

Brilliant dialogue on the political economy of labor organizing in the aftermath of Musk’s Twitter buy out. The loss of tech worker leverage, explain the speakers, has to do with several key factors:

It just comes down to public health and safety. “Our livelihoods are not for sale.” #datacenters are an invasion.

Pennsylvania is not a “right to work” state meaning workers earn more on the hour. Industry bipasses this restriction by hiring out of town workers to work on #datacenter sites

So impressed with Senator Muth’s stance on this industrial takeover of communities (aka data centers). “We have 100 + years of science on our side.” 💚

First time hearing Senator Muth and she has some great points: “Guardrail is an industry term. It's simply a recommendation and it means nothing without significant speed limits.” "There is no mom n pop data centers. These are industrial not commercial projects.” “Devil is always in the details”

Data center opponents have assembled a potent political force. But without a more expansive vision, there is a risk that this techlash could be co-opted and fizzle out.

“What we were seeing, I’d argue, was the ‘enshittification’ of American vehicles,” Padgett told me, referring to a term coined by the technologist Cory Doctorow to describe a purposeful, profit-minded degradation in product quality. “We were being told to expect and accept less.”

@violazhou.bsky.social makes a great point here on the contradiction of AI adoption. Let’s call it "AI-Masking” – the deep cognative dissonance of publicly rejecting LLMs as a moral stance while actively using in private.

Soft power is fading. The emerging multipolar world is made of hard stuff: trade deals, rare-earth metals, choke points, engineering talent, industrial capacity. As The Polycrisis newsletter put it, "You can print money but you can’t print molecules.”
