Agreed. It would gut one of the last independent agencies. I do take issue with the fact that the piece quotes one employee anonymously to characterize internal staff views of the agency's timidity.

They absolutely have to do this and a bunch of other things --like killing the filibuster --if they want to actually govern in ways people can see and appreciate. Otherwise, the predictable thermostatic backlash to whoever is in charge will come for Dems, too.

Hey @abdulelsayed.bsky.social, do you think Mike Rogers has even swam in Grand Traverse Bay, or cares about keeping it blue? I don't.

The Times fails to call this what it is: illegal or, if you are risk adverse, "likely illegal." If there is real question about this, the paper should explain.

National Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress
The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

I find it funny AND enraging. A shameless GOP is trying to whitewash and dismiss Trump's most blatant crimes before he got reelected. The only principle at work is "our guy can do crimes" and any attempt to address it is itself partisan. It's not a recipe for the rule of law.

Why are so many bad things happening in government after we elected and empowered an administration that is hostile to government and experience bureaucrats? It's like putting Maoists on your corporate board and then watching profitability evaporate.

I really like the Weekends. In general I prefer their stuff that crosses more directly into hard rock riffage, like Caught Between Stations or their biggest sleeper banger, Slapped Actress. I think of them as AC/DC mashed up with Springsteen like narrative lyrics.

Liptak's framing bothers me. It's horserace coverage of the Court. Yes, sometimes the Court (but not all of the Court) reject's Trump's arguments...because they are obviously illegal or unconstitutional. The piece doesn't even mention this.

Echoes of Hemingway, but with more interiority. There is enough action sequences to maybe sustain a movie, but it's a strange mix of meditative, elegiac writing punctuated by shooting.

Because they are making a movie based on it, I reread the Dog Stars. There is genuinely beautiful writing in it --especially in the first half, which I think is the strongest part of the book.

Amen. It's shocking to me how many entities, including the conservatives on the Supreme Court and journalists and pundits --do not directly confront or care about the fact that the Congress controls federal revenue and how it is spent. Not DOGE. Not the President.

I vastly preferred when the federal government and its policies were implemented and administered by bureaucrats with expertise who weren't political actors. I think it's obvious that regardless of the flaws of the traditional approach, it was vastly better than this.

change or destroy federal property without said appropriation or authorization, and arrogate state authority to determine who should receive a mail-in ballot. This is the beauty of the ever-so-flexible concept of standing.

Yes. I am not a constitutional lawyer, but it seems like if a radical right wing court can basically question or overturn decades of precedent and constitutional assumptions --say on what power the President has or what birthright citizenship means --that means everything can be questioned,

Agree. It is a classic problem that seems to only be an issue for the left. Left policy positions are often judged--and typically maligned--based on who supports those views and what OTHER views those supporters might have.

Governing is a lot harder than campaigning (as you know), and our system has so many veto points and vested interests --and a reactionary Supreme Court--that delivering real reform seems at times to be impossible. I think you should assume that most people do not trust the party establishment,

chicaattack.bsky.social @chicaattack.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
I think this means being very thoughtful and strategic in identifying policy levers and legislative changes that will have the greatest short-term impact on people's lives, in an effort to rebuild trust and undergird support for longer-term reforms. This is not going be easy.

Dem voter here from Antrim County (Eastport!). I agree with the message of your latest video. But convincing people to pull the lever for change is necessary but not sufficient. We have to deliver visible and salient changes to the status quo or in the next cycle voters will again vote for change.

to act like kings, dictating spending as they see fit. But Douthat ignores this, and he seemingly waives a lot of this away by saying Trump hasn't consolidated as much power as some feared. Really? Most of the column is, of course, criticizing democratic governance and then there is this claim:
100
chicaattack.bsky.social @chicaattack.bsky.social · 08/08/2026
but he doesn't dwell on the long-term damage done to the rule of law, alliances, government capacity and finances, etc. Someone more willing to look Trump's authoritarianism more squarely in the face might argue that Trump has opened the door for future presidents, both on the left and right,
