I like Ann but I feel like I like the idea of Ann in my head more than I like her in the game and that's fine but it's also kind of depressing? But I also understand why someone else wouldn't have the faith in the game to put in the work to find the potential that exists in her presentation.

I feel this way broadly about the female characters. While I think people should put in effort to appreciate female characters in media, it's also just a reality that the arcs presented in p5 do the majority of them a disservice and fail to actually succeed in telling a coherent storyline

Persona 5 is such a "potential" game for me where what I like is predicated around the idea of what it could have been if the writers weren't misogynistic cowards playing at leftism without ever actually being willing to navigate it. But I also get why someone might not be willing to engage.

Ryuji is always my favorite to see in the ideal reality because the fundamental relationship he had with Akira is effectively erased in every way that matters. Akira's presence ceases to exist when you remove the conflict from their lives and that adds so much meat to their character as well.

The main cast had their narratives fulfilled, but Akechi and Sumire have so much space to be examined. And thirdsem is invested in them as characters but the thieves as a whole feel tacked on in a way that does the narrative a disservice. I like seeing them in their wishes but less so afterward.

I always wish there was more fic of royal trio having to take on Maruki by themselves because I think it's so interesting for the thieves to be held hostage by his reality and for the trio to be filled out more dynamically, as canon provides so little opportunity for them to narratively engage.

"I don't care about our stupid game," Ren snapped, an audible panic in his words. Goro saw by the wavering light that Ren was trying to steady a tremble. "Call me a fraud if it pleases you. All I know is that this house isn't safe for any of us. We need to find Maruki and leave. Burn the place to the ground while we're at it. The spirit were dealing with is stronger than just me." Under his breath he murmured, "It was stupid to risk your life here."

Goro pushed himself up to follow as Ren headed towards the door, snatching a few extra candles in the process. Might as well, especially with the power out. "The show's over, Ren. No need to play it up when it's just us."

A shaky breath made Ren's form waver in the light. "I've never been pretending. I know it comforts you to think this is all just a game"—his grip tightened on the door knob—“but it's real to me."

Goro's lips pressed together in a frown. "Do you expect me to call you anything but a fool for that?"

"As long as you make it out of here alive, call me whatever you want."

Persona 123 were all really melancholy to me and then p4 is so different despite the tone of the game being a sleepy little murder mystery? And then p5 was a bombastic weirdo that wanted to be everything at once to its benefit and detriment.

I so much prefer persona when it's melancholy compared to when it tries to be unabashedly optimistic honestly. Royal manages to thread the needle better with that emotion in a lot of ways, especially in the notion of how stories end and move on without you.

the strikers ending is also pretty good because i appreciate them all coming together before all going off in their own ways. it's also inherently kind of sad but i prefer that kind of thing. it's cheesy too, but i can work with its style of cheesiness better.

i find the base game ending to be cheesy unrealistic schlock that wants to have its cake and eat it too, though so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i hate the premise of the yaldabaoth ending being a true "victory." and i prefer lingering on the sadness of what akira has to leave behind with tokyo and the metaverse.

i love the royal ending. i love that akira has to leave tokyo without their friends, as they once came to the city. i love that they're haunted. i love that sumire is still struggling to retain some idea of personal selfhood. and i love that maruki is a reflection of how the "villain" can grow.

he recognizes that his work in psychiatry was something where he did harm and he chooses to leave it behind. he chooses to take another path in his life and he cannot change the fact that he did harm, but he can reduce that which was inflicted and avoid causing further harm.

because, sure. maruki fucked up. he enormously hurt sumire yoshizawa. he did akira and the other kids in the group wrong. he inflicted a severe injustice upon tokyo when he took over the power of mementos. however, he's still A Person. and in the aftermath, he changes.

the draft function is great because it means i can be annoyed at an opinion, immediately go to made a post about it, realize i don't want to seem like i'm annoyed with another person for expressing an opinion different than mine, and then proceed to forget that i ever wrote that for months.

i do like this little exchange with morgana because while the thieves do distrust akechi, having a note like this where morgana is expressing a little bit of fondness and optimism is sweet. its easy to frame morgana as disliking akechi, but i think he'd be one of the nicer ones about things.

i primarily played p3 when i was 14, was absolutely shellshocked by the experience, and then read umineko at 17-19 primarily and was gobsmacked by that one. it's kind of crazy that it's been almost 20 years since i initially played p3...it's kind of old at this point!

you should read umineko! it's a million words long, repetitive as all get out, strangely flawed in fascinating ways, desperate to rehabilitate the premise of family, and ultimately one of the most meaningful pieces of literature i've engaged with. for all its failures, i love it a lot.
