Saturday walk from Hexham to Chollerford and back. Walk broken by a good pint at the Boat side.
The meeting point of the North Tyne and the South Tyne. The Boat side Inn near Hexham. A stone built pub, serving real ale from Allendale brewery. The stone tower of St michael's, Warden. The church is like a miniature cathedral: a proper choir, and two transepts.

And so back to Watlington.
An informal sign, showing a line drawing of a friar, and the label 3/4 mile. An old fashioned black and white finger signpost on the edge of Watlington. The destinations indicated include Oxford and Wallingford.

A 1967 window by John Piper. There are different explanations of it online, but surely it's Heb 4.12? "The word of God cuts more finely than any double edged sword"
A mainly blue stained glass window. There is a red sword from top to bottom, and a pair of hands holding an open book in front of it.

Attractive and interestingly shaped church at Pishill. It's shaped like a T, with the altar at the end of one of the arms, and so hidden from a large part of the church. The pulpit is at the centre, as you'd expect.
A flint built church, with a small belfry at the near end. Reredos behind the altar. A ceramic work, showing a lamb with flag in the centre, and the writing "The lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world."

Circular walk from Wallington, up the hill and through Christmas Common and Russell's Water.
Signpost at Christmas Common, giving directions for Stokenchurch, Chinnor, Nettlebed and Henley. The Fox and Hounds pub at Christmas Common. The left hand third of the building is brick, the right hand end stone. The village signpost at Russell's Water. A white post with a sign showing an old fashioned car under a very blue sky.

Arrival at Bedwyn, with a Muscovy duck to welcome me. This is the only moving boat I saw all day.
A Muscovy duck looking stern. A white thatched cottage, with the woodwork picked out in green. A narrow boat moving on the canal, in a snowy landscape.

A cold, crisp day, great for a walk. There were quite a few grey wagtails along the canal side.
A canal lock on the Kennet and Avon, in frosty weather. Winter vegetation turned white by a hard frost. A green and cream coloured narrowboat in a landscape with a thin snow covering.

From Newbury to Bedwyn along the Kennet and Avon. The canal/riverside at Newbury is a lot more interesting than I had realised.
Stone built tea room by the canal at Newbury, presumably converted from a warehouse. A group of white rendered buildings alongside the river at Newbury. More buildings alongside the river, frost on their roofs. A tall, red brick built building, now converted into flats. A grey steel fire escape to the right.

Flooding in Oxfordshire: what can we do?
Oxfordshire has a flooding problem – and it’s getting worse. We are not talking Florida-style flooding. Oxfordshire is about as far as it’s possible to get from the sea in England – and although that...

Reading to Henley along the Thames path (but with a big diversion just before Henley) cold, but sunny - great walking weather.
Huntley and Palmer's biscuit factory - red brick against a blue sky. "Churn" a tug boat on the river Thames. Footpath signposts
