I don't often write in French or Spanish, but their influence is very appreciated when I write formal emails to elected officials. I feel compelled to make it warm AND formulaic, and I guess it somehow works.

Seed the Commons is heading to Santa Marta, Colombia in a few days for the first conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels. The colonial war that is being waged on Iran and the resulting lack of fertilizer are pointing ever more clearly to the urgency of this transition. #fossilfreefuture

Filed my taxes and owe something for the first time ever. Not a surprise though, just annoying the compromises one has to make to ensure family has health care in this country.

I took apart my six-year-old laptop yesterday, carefully brushed off all the lint and dog hair, gently cleaned and vacuumed the fans, wiped down the case, and put it back together. It's so quiet now!

I meant to migrate my last domain name from Gandi to Porkbun this past weekend but totally spaced out and then because I waited last minute, it expired for a few hours. Downtime is very annoying.

I watched the half time show on YouTube and I understood maybe 10%. Bad Bunny's Spanish is effectively inaccessible to the majority of Spanish speakers. The show itself was good, but the music, rhythm, and vibe has much more in common with US traditions. A Spanish settler-colonial base with a […]

Anytime it rains in the Bay, I think what a huge difference free transit could make here. Driving is terrible and expensive in these conditions, biking and walking isn't a whole lot of fun, but transit is legit unaffordable to many.

Meaningful victory in SF: Seems like there's a deal with the November transit variable rate parcel tax. We're still getting a pass-through, but it's much smaller and manageable.

LLMs might steal content and hallucinate and produce generally untrustworthy content, but they're oh so perfect for the insurance industry. One claim adjuster can now do the job of several, denying claims with seemingly plausible justifications.

Noticed another cut bike lock and a two chains yesterday. This was on the ground floor bike rack area, next to the staffed lobby and in plain view of cameras. So three more stolen bikes. Insurance companies must hate our building.

Now that I spend less time on the fedi, I'm not sure there's much value in having two single-user instances (this one and social.sanfranciscan.org). They're complementary in many ways, and that's cool, but maybe I ought to consolidate it all into one.

I haven't had mail service in weeks. Our building's mailboxes kept getting broken into, which led USPS suspending mail to our building, forcing tenants to go to the Townsend annex across SOMA to pick up their mail. This has meant waiting 30-45 minutes in line to get a fraction of my mail. I […]

So many AI-generated posters in our neighborhood lately. Comedy shows, house painters, community events… all rendered in the same generic slop-style. It even looks like the fonts are generated too, which creates weird artifacts and inconsistent letters. Gross.
A flier for "Choose your own comedy", which was created using genAI. It shows a comic book style page of a woman deciding if she wants to fall in love with a knight or become a witch. A flier for "The Longest Table", a community event hosted by the Civic Joy Fund. The art is people eating at a long table, but the art was generated using AI. A flier for "Brushin' Around Painting". This one has AI generated elements like a paintbrush and paint roller, plus the same very generic yellowish hue that a lot of AI art has now. Looking closely at the letters and you can see the font isn't very clean looking. It's hard to describe, but nobdy would make a font like this. It's all capital letters but they don't feel like they belong together. Straight edges aren't quiet straight, letters have weird bumps on them, etc. A close up of an AI generated poster. The letters have this weird inconsistency to them, for example all of the "E"s look slightly different than each other. Some of the letters disappear at weird points, like part of an "N" is missing. There's a weird white glow around the letters that doesn't look on purpose. It looks like a compression artifact where the dark blue font couldn't blend properly with the yellow background.
