As an Appalachian, I appreciate this so much. She demonstrated how to laugh back at people who treat us like dumb hillbillies, and be proud of our accents and our home, and just be our full mountain selves.

But just as importantly, where'd you get that hat? I've got a cat daddy friend who (might) love one.

I love her voice and phrasing. There's something about her that reminds me of Dolly Parton.

This is irrelevant, but seeing you on my feed reminds me that I really loved Sockington and his Twitter account. Thank you for that all those years ago.

Back in college I took a class called Popular Literature, where we read a romance and noir and King and other "popular" fiction, and talked about how in their day, Dickens and Austen etc were "popular" fiction, and how our perceptions of what constitutes big-L Literature evolve.

I think I first came to your social media posts through someone else's post about "Starter Villain." As a cat lady, the cover and plot intrigued me (and I enjoyed the book!).

My mom referred to me and my sister (we're both in our 40s) as "adult children" and it felt like both words were equally true.

I moved to wool balls after my cat started eating used dryer sheets. I got tired of finding soggy bundles of barfed-up dryer sheets. (The cat is fine, but he consistently fails to learn lessons about what is and is not a thing he should eat.)

I'm excited that I'll have a short story in issue 2 of "Untelling," the Hindman Settlement School's new literary magazine.

The latest episode of the Salvation South Deluxe podcast is live, and we talk to five authors about how "Southern noir" lit is actually, as #SACosby says, the "gospel of the dispossessed.” With @davidjoy.bsky.social, @tayari.bsky.social, Chris Offutt, and Michael Farris Smith.

Agreed. (As a side note, I used to work with Steve Watkins' wife Janet at the Free Lance-Star.)

Nope! Even though we were in the coalfields. I learned about the Mine Wars in high school English when my teacher assigned us Denise Giardina's "Storming Heaven."

Since people are here now, an introduction: I'm from Southwest Virginia now in Richmond, former journalist now speechwriter, into Appalachian literature, old-time music, and cute animals.

I bought them a witch hat. It was not well received. They tore off the chin strap and threw up a hairball on it.

My Appalachian accent definitely gets stronger whenever I go home or talk to my mom on the phone. But I wish it didn't weaken in the first place. It's a marker of an identity that I love.

It's so bad. I live in Richmond but I'm from SWVA and go home often, and I'll often get off 81 and use Route 11 just to feel safer.

Also went to that Lebanese festival today. So hard to pick one favorite, it's so good. Keep an eye out for the Armenian festival in the fall, too.
