Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
A Japanese poster for the 1984 film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, featuring the titular character in the foreground with her hair waving in the wind, appearing to be dressed in faded pink because of being lit by sunset colors, with a massive isopod-like creature in the background.

(I was just thinking about this earlier and how I didn’t think it would ever actually be a relevant phrase I could say. I should stop doubting myself lmao)

My ranking of the stories in Short Trips: (and yes, I did initially say Freedom was a superior Master story to Stop the Pigeon, but on reflection a lot of that was just my general preference for Delgado over Ainley, and Freedom just isn’t that interesting imo outside of some conceptual elements)
The top half of my ranking of the Short Trips stories, with asterisks beside each title to denote my rating out of five stars. The list is as follows:
1. The People’s Temple (5 stars)
2. Mother’s Little Helper (5 stars)
3. Ace of Hearts (5 stars)
4. The Last Days (5 stars)
5. Model Train Set (5 stars)
6. Stop the Pigeon (4 stars)
7. The Parliament of Rats (4 stars)

repulsor rey
An image of the character Rey from the Star Wars sequel trilogy, holding her hand dramatically in front of her, with a blurry sand background. Blue lightning appears to be emanating from a spot behind the back of her head.

Moving on to Decalog 2: Lost Property! It’s themed around “the various homes owned or otherwise acquired by the good Doctor during the course of his travels through time and space”, to quote the Editors’ Note, which already feels more promising to me than the last volume’s premise.

1) Fallen Angel by Andy Lane A delightfully atmospheric 2nd Doctor tale inspired heavily by the work of Leslie Charteris (to whom the story’s dedicated), with intriguing Time Lord lore, gallant English bonhomie, & many Winnie-the-Pooh quotations. An objectifying description of Zoe is the sole blot.
The Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, and Zoe Heriot cling to each other in fright on one of their many dangerous adventures.

As well as continuing my VNA/VMA read-thru, I’m catching up on the first two Decalogs, and I thought I’d do some short reviews here! Here’s a thread about the first Doctor Who short story anthology, Decalog, edited by Mark Stammers & Stephen James Walker. (I’ll save the framing narrative for last.)

Not only this but there should be more companion overlap in general! The Hartnell, Troughton, and late-Tom-Baker-thru-Davison eras did this well, and it’s far more interesting to see as many characters as possible’s reactions to and dynamics with each other
