Fun fact: The Steam version is DRM-free. The DLC cosmetics won't work without Steam running, but the actual game itself is fully playable from beginning to end without the client.

Yeah, it's a bizarre exception. If you know where to look, Denuvo isn't really a problem for preservation anymore, which is what my number-one concern was, but it still feels insulting that they expect us to pay for games and then jam in a DRM that forces us to ask permission to play what we bought.

Personally, I'm wondering why it hasn't been removed from Final Fantasy Tactics yet. Square Enix is usually really good about removing it six months after a game's release, but that one slipped through, for some reason.

Yeah, older games are like that. Denuvo used to be a one-and-done license, but now it's a monthly fee, so they have more of a reason to get rid of it. The only reason they would get rid of it before is if they cared about the customers, and we all see how true that is for most companies.

I'm kind of gutted that they're using Denuvo in the final part of this trilogy on the PC, most likely because there's no timed console exclusivity this time around. Hopefully Square Enix continues their pattern of removing it six months to a year after they release a game.

Square Enix usually does a six-month contract, but it's not a guarantee. FF Tactics still has it, for example, and FF7 Revelation is getting DLC, so it might take longer for them to remove Denuvo, which doesn't need to be there in the first place.
