Today’s annoyance as an Aussie indie game publication: Receiving a review code one day after embargo lifts and then reading an article elsewhere of “here’s how long it took 5 people to finish this game”, implying 5 separate people from one site got codes while we get the scraps.

Wolverine is great! Confused that a 78 Metacritic average means people think this is a bad game. 78 is literally “good to great”. It’s like a 4 star movie review. And it isn’t even released yet to the public so stop whinging! Games are fun! THIS IS MEANT TO BE FUN, REMEMBER!?!?

Super strange. Age verification is one thing, but forcing people to use a credit card is bonkers.

What I love about this is that at @checkpointau.bsky.social we have reviewed all the major finalists here. It feels good to cover so many Aussie games every year and give them the space they deserve!!

If one good thing came out of today, it’s that everybody has been sharing wonderful articles, photos, videos and stories about Dolly Parton, en masse. She really was one of the good ones. 💔

New movie review from me. I wanted to have fun with this one - and it has SOME brief redeeming moments… but mostly I was left confused, frustrated and wanting more.

So I wrote about 18 previews from my time at Summer Game Fest, which I’m pretty proud of. Even though it was two months ago I still feel like I’m recovering from what was a whirlwind and an event that I now plan to visit each year. Super valuable.

Play Big Walk. And, contrary to “please visit our website”, don’t even read this review or anything else really if you’re at all interested in it. Go in blind and just enjoy.

I haven’t been posting much, mostly because I’ve been very loved up and focused on that as a priority rather than engaging in *gestures wildly at everything*. Anyway here’s some pics of my handsome wonderful men and my happy face for your feed.

VII was notoriously bloated back in the day - Reimagined does an excellent job of making it more palatable. It’s still a beefy game but much more approachable than the original. And the narrative is broken up in a way that almost feels episodic which might help! :)

So, this year, I’m going to re-write the narrative of what the holiday period means to me. Matt and I will be flying to L.A. ne week to spend Xmas and NYE with *chosen* family l care about. Celebrations, theme parks, escape rooms, insane food, parties, shows, all alongside truly wonderful people.

This time of year is tough for me now. 2 years ago, I spent my last Xmas Day with my Mum, while she was in hospital. Last year, Xmas was seriously difficult. Despite spending it with other loved ones, it was a sad time, and being in my home, without Mum, was the worst. (1/3)

Solid movie though, some good jump scares. You can see all the pieces here and why they fleshed it out into a full universe. Strong foundations, especially wild given the real life people it’s based on were apparently con artists.

First thought - chaining your dog up outside on the first night in a new house is the worst, and then nobody went to feed them in the morning first thing? Irresponsible pet ownership in movies kills me. I hope they all die now anyway 😂

Reviewing Battlefield 6 felt like a huge task, particularly after flying to L.A. (on a trip that turned out to be personally life-altering) to be a part of its big reveal. Thankfully, the game is genuinely great, and even after publishing I’m itching to jump right back in.

I loved Good Boy. It’s rare for a movie to offer something completely different, and seeing horror from the perspective of a dog made for a terrifying, uncomfortable and compelling watch. Indy is easily the best pet actor in history. A must see for anybody who loves dogs.
