Stop negotiating with puppets. Go after who holds the strings. The political machine is a hostage situation. I need tactical minds to help build a team and disrupt the game. How do we win if we don't change the physics? Let's get Geppetto. open.substack.com/pub/checht/p...
A promotional graphic for the Substack "The Musings of Chris Hecht". The top half features white text on a dark brown background reading: "Politicians Are Puppets. Let's Talk About Who Holds the Strings. Let's Get Geppetto. checht.substack.com". The bottom half features the 1889 political cartoon "The Bosses of the Senate" by Joseph Keppler, depicting giant, bloated figures shaped like money bags representing corporate trusts looming over tiny U.S. Senators at their desks.

While tangential to the argument for creating a larger government, it is clear that the GOP lacks fiscal responsibility and consistently spends irresponsibly, rarely to improve citizens' outcomes.
Data showing spending and deficit increases under each president since Reagan

Journeyed to MLK memorial with the kids today to discuss the relevance of our holiday and how the struggle for equality continues. I'll let his own words speak.
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.Men for years have been talking about war and peace. But now, no longer can they just talk about it. It is no longer the choice between violence and non-violence in this world. It's non-violence or non-existence.I refuse to accept the cynical notion that nation after nation must spiral down a militaristic stairway into the hell of thermonuclear destruction. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant.No. No, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream,

Despots care little about the will of the people.
Poll results in a stacked bar: “A majority of Americans oppose using military force to overthrow Maduro.” The chart is overwhelmingly red with the category “Strongly or somewhat oppose.”

I just dropped off my ballot at the local drop box for the California special election on Prop 50. Don’t sit this one out. Your YES matters now more than ever. Munger’s 💰 has flooded the airwaves, and the NO voters will be out To find out the easiest way for you to vote, check out ocvote.gov/voting

@noupside.bsky.social, great article. Thank you. I feel disinformation is a scourge on US discourse, and I am a huge fan of the DSA, particularly fact-checking. Are we doomed to never have it in the USA, as it would be seen as a form of compelled speech, which would violate the First Amendment?
And while it’s counter to U.S. speech culture and First Amendment law to legislate something like a fact-checking requirement, it’s worth remembering that fact-checking is not censorship— it’s adding more speech, and it’s an intervention that enjoys broad public support. Community Notes is a promising innovation that more platforms should adopt, but it only works if the users trust that the system is fair—which requires transparency. Unfortunately, there’s no requirement for American social media companies to be transparent. There’s also no requirement that they take down networks of inauthentic bots (another thing U.S. users support).

They think ‘tyranny’ is having a book about same-sed parents in a school library. We think ‘tyranny’ is unleashing the military on citizens who are peacefully protesting. Who’s right?

What exactly did Fauci say here that was inaccurate? I watched it twice, and he said nothing misleading or incorrect. Vaccines will make it harder to catch; if you get infected, you are less likely to transmit it and die. Or you can just let your family die of measles and polio. See covid data here:

Oh, it’s not banned, but it can only be used for the Afrikaners of South Africa. Then, you can use disinformation props and get global coverage and a million people amplifying a false narrative.
Cheeto Mussolini, aka Mr. Trump, held up a printed article from "American Thinker," a conservative online magazine, that included a screenshot, credited to Reuters, that the president said showed "all White farmers that are being buried.” The actual photos were from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This is from Pope Leo’s first mass. Notice no reference to Afrikaners. These are the people we should be accepting as refugees and do whatever we can to end the violence.
"In the joy of faith and communion, we cannot forget our brothers and sisters who are suffering because of war," he said. "In Gaza, the surviving children, families and elderly are reduced to starvation. In Myanmar, new hostilities have cut short innocent young lives. Finally, war-torn
Ukraine awaits negotiations for a just and lasting peace."

The full quote from Bertrand Russell’s essay “Freedom and Government”
The first step in a fascist movement is the combination under an energetic leader of a number of men who possess more than the average share of leisure, brutality, and stupidity. The next step is to fascinate fools and muzzle the intelligent, by emotional excitement on the one hand and terrorism on the other.

This technique is as old as the hills; it was practiced in almost every Greek city, and the moderns have only enlarged its scale.

Young Kim has been afraid of her constituents and hasn’t held a town hall. While she has been hiding, it looks like she will make a rare appearance in Rancho Santa Margarita this Friday, 5/9. You can pay $60 to hear from her or make your voice heard at the outside protest. www.whereisyoungkim.com

Again the fairness doctrine was not unconstitutional. I'm through engaging with you as you don't see the need for a remedy to our current situation and have circular arguments.

I see why people think you're MAGA, you're not looking for solutions. That's why there should be a new fairness doctrine. Does this really represent free speech, or is the free speech you want only right-wing propaganda? If you don't think this is a problem then you are the problem?

Ooh, I wholeheartedly agree. The system has been increasingly corrupt since the 70s when wealth inequality has been skewing to the top. No doubt about it. The wealthy control the political system which has done very little to protect people. I would not defend a single person listed here.

Not all wealthy CEOs are evil, but since the 1970s, we've seen increased income distribution to the rich. Driven by government and corporate policies that become mutually beneficial, the wealthy help those stay in power that benefit their selfish/greedy interests.

The official name was Subbie’s Roll Inn, which my fellow students never used. We always called it “buck fifty” or “buck fifty sub,” which happened to be the amount you paid for an eight-inch sub sandwich at 2:00 a.m. $1.50 for a sandwich dates me, too.
