The cutoffs at field boundaries in the top left suggest something that's really there. Old artillery craters would be interesting, but they're not very round, so that's probably not it.

Somehow just remaining honestly funny about regular things seems like an act of defiance in itself. Plus the fact it gives a bright spot in the week and an easy check off the holiday list, that part is good too

The almost fluorescent lowland greens may be a factor too, since they're so much more prominent than the blues of the mountains

The right gives a sense of "more" from the stronger contrast (with the exception of the dark blue area, as noted elsewhere) On the left, the Andes don't register as "more" as much - the contrast against ocean is stronger, but the low brightness of the dark colour seems to work against that

The main practical effect seems to be a reaffirmation that his sympathies are with Russia, not Ukraine.

Just noticed today that Martin Isenberg's webpage on the University of North Carolina CS server is gone. The last read on archive.org is from March 16th of last year. He had his problems but his contribution to lidar can't be denied. www.cs.unc.edu/~isenburg

I do wonder how much the old defence of animal welfare on the basis that the effect on people of mistreating animals is corrosive to people's morality applies to chatbots. No analogue to 'pain' with chatbots, but normalization of bullying behaviour by people is still wrong.

Settings -> Appearance -> Browser Theme is good too, if you mainly want to change the colour theme. Other than that, it seems OK (so far, for me at least)

I love that bucket hat. Looks so dignified but also unassuming. The informal tophat.

There was a moment during the pandemic when I heard Coldplay come on over the speakers in a supermarket and my first thought was 'what a pleasant song'. That was the point at which I knew the lockdown was really starting to affect me.

They don't make clear if they're adjusting for water content - cheese hardness. If they did, my belief is that the UK would win based on the firm, sound grounding of high cheddar consumption.

It would be wonderfully nerdy if a SUN SPARCstation was used in some capacity when the system runs, if only for data readouts.

See here for a (tongue in cheek) attempt at statistically-driven music. Unsurprisingly, the song that best matched the predicted optimal style is boring, while the song that best matched the predicted undesirable style is hilarious. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Peo...

What's odd to me is that the benefit seems really small (who actually needs or wants recaps of conversations), while the cost is so high - their privacy reputation is one of the main reasons to like the company.

It would reduce to zero the number of people adversely affected by global warming & other environmental problems. The social goals would definitely take a hit, though.

Amazing, thanks. It really seems like we're moving into a mode of computer interaction more and more like what Heinlein talked about in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, where programmers/techs are people who are skilled at 'talking' to computers rather than people who enter discrete commands.

Very impressive. How much time on your part did it take for directing the llm/ reviewing the results? Was much manual editing of the results needed?

Seeing this just makes me think about how angry I would be if another country attacked me and my neighbours in the same way. Much love to Ukraine and Ukrainians, victory will be yours, and right will win.

Huh, that's the data service I used to use for correction of aerial survey data (knowing the air temperature / humidity helps when computing lidar range data). Having the single source where ground stations across CONUS could be fetched was very useful.

Absolutely. There's also the population / power difference, and close association during the cold war. Both countries have also sought close ties with the EU. It makes one wonder whether a Trump-like figure in the US would use that as a casus belli were Canada to seek membership.
