Hello friends, Melissa made the very difficult decision to let sweet Watkins go this morning. I will be closing the fundraiser. All proceeds will go towards and memorial/cremation cost and to help recuperate Melissa. Thank you all for donating and helping in a desperate time of need.

SHT Day 1 - 12 Miles Beavers and mud and hornets, oh my! Made it to camp in one piece. Stepped in a knee deep mud puddle 10 minutes in. Marci has a small harness rub (she’ll be okay). Avoided large hornets nest. Getting the bad juju out now I guess. #sht #superiorhikingtrail #backpackingi

We’re going hiking! Marci and TJ will be hiking the Superior Hiking Trail over the next month in honor of Marci’s son, Jake. We’ll try to post updates as we go, but may have our phone off and/or a lack of cell service. Wish us luck, and we’ll see you when we get back!

Dog update, kept short for here. Check IG or FB for full post. Marci has DCM. She is non symptomatic and we will continue to run her, with our vets advice. She will not be allowed to race. We are hopeful she can help train up new leaders and still enjoy rec runs. Feel free to ask questions.

Getting back to the new ‘normal’ without Jake. I’m lucky it’s summer, as I don’t know what I’ll do without my best leader come fall. It’s been over a month and yet it feels like just yesterday Jake was prancing around the yard.

I wanted to update here that Jake passed suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday. I am devastated and beyond any words. Trying to shrink down his life to a limited character count is just insurmountable right now. I have a long winded post on my personal page (TJ Squires) for those who want.

Jake was my heart and soul. He filled a hole that my first heart dog, Zelda, left gaping open. She passed suddenly, at about 2.5 years old. Now Jake left this earth, nearly the same. I want to say it wasn’t his time. Life is so incredibly unfair. I needed this dog so much. But the morning before he passed, two female cardinals came to our bird feeders. We don’t generally get cardinals. I whole believe it was Naya and Zelda taking a visit, making sure things are taken care of before he left this earth. I truly hope I get to see him again some day.

I don’t have favorite dogs. But if I did, Cast would be up there. Cast has been with us a little over a year now. He was meant to be here 🖤 #alaskanhusky #sleddog

The dogs got an ‘A+’ for their unplanned fire drill today. A brush fire right across the street got out of hand, only a few hundred feet from the dog yard. While the fire stayed across the road, the smoke got bad so I evacuated the dogs. We are all safe, and the fire has been put out.

The fire department used a helicopter and grabbed water from the stream in our backyard. I guess that beaver dam was a good thing after all!

I left before it got closer. I could hear the trees crashing down. My partner stayed behind with the house and I took the dogs in the trailer to the local community center to avoid smoke inhalation. It was thick when we left!

The dogs before we left. They were confused on why we weren’t doing play time.

I put up new lights in the dog yard. I only bought 2 strings, I want to see how long they last before investing in the whole yard. They supposedly can withstand rain, wind, snow, freezing temps… so we shall see. The dog yard is becoming a cozy little spot! #alaskanhusky #homeimprovements #uglydogs

Are spring blues a thing?? No snow for sled, too warm for ATV runs, too muddy with feet of odd piles of snow for hiking… I have so many projects that I can’t touch until the ground is thawed. I fear I am ready for summer.

Cookie doesn’t mind the weather change. She says she can hike in any weather. Mud, snow, rain, shine, bring it on.

Her human is tired of the mud and off weather, however.

Building trust with dogs takes time. But when there is trust on both ends, then, and only then, can a true relationship start to form.

Weekend adventures. I scouted out a good winter camp spot. We’ll probably lose the snow before I have the chance to camp, but I’m excited for next year! I dropped the dogs on their gangline but Dovah instantly took to chewing, so I’ll have to look into getting a cable drop line.

Queso and Jake in lead. Jake really wanted to keep going here. If it were up to him, we would’ve ran another 20 before stopping.

It’s ‘official.’ Queso and Cookie aren’t going anywhere. They’re officially here to stay! To celebrate, here are some puppy photos of the two (plus Cast) from Ashley (Lost Lake Racing)! Fun fact, this was a litter of only 3 pups. So the whole gang’s here!

We are in a weird inbetween phase where there’s not enough snow for sleds but it’s still too icy in most spots for ATV. The backyard is still knee deep snow while the front is all grass. I just want to be active with dogs but the WEATHER 🥲 Queso for tax being a Good Boy

Big Team. After this run though, Tikan has really solidified her decision to enter full time retirement. We’ll have to have a party for her ❤️‍🩹 New pups did great. BMO also got up in lead for the last half mile! Kid’s got potential!

Meet Queso and Cookie! These guys are on ‘trial’ with the kennel for the next few weeks. Though, if they are anything like their brother Cast, they aren’t going anywhere. These guys were planned prior to the sled upgrade, but now we’re really hoping to upgrade with a bigger team! #uglydogs

Queso- an almost 4 year old male, he is Cast’s littermate brother. He is inquisitive but quiet. A little aloof, but I have been told once you are his friend, you are friend for LIFE.

Cookie- Cast’s littermate sister. Almost 4, she is a spunky, sassy, talkative girl. Very outgoing and go-with-the-flow.

My 8 dog team halfway through the wilderness of the Ely area. Jake and Cast in lead, Beedle and Pistol (borrowed) in swing, Finn and Flint(borrowed) in team, and BMO and Dovah in wheel. I was first out (bib 1 scratched) and last back in. It was a tough race for us. But I am grateful everyone finished strong, still standing in harness. As always, we learn something on each run. This run I learned I need to tweak my feeding schedule so we aren’t having so many bathroom breaks on the trail.

Finn is an enthusiastic boy. When we pull out the harnesses? Scream. Finn loves to run. When he is on the line? Scream. He is not a patient boy. When we stop on the trail? Scream. Finn is a good sled dog. Finn pulls hard. But he will scream while doing it. Photos by Les Conrad #uglydogs

Color coordination is fun, but another musher pointed out that my vibrant booties made the dogs’ feet easier to see. We can keep an eye on gaits a little easier, and spot when booties fly off. Now next year, I will need to get *all* my booties and lines matching our green and yellow colors!
