Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I work in a shared building with other businesses and posted a reel about a downed tree blocking a major intersection and lo and behold 10 minutes later I hear my own voice from another office telling me there's a downed tree! Bonus photo of the tree in question. 000
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 23/09/2026I stopped at a farm stand to get their hours for a "Fall Fun" guide and uh, now I'm writing a story about coffins. Meet Gary Duyck, who at 89, makes coffins in his 115-year-old barn! 012
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Harrington is out. However you feel about it, I'd like to thank Harrington for causing two firsts at News in the Grove: Printing the word "fuck," and embedding a GIF in a story of an elected official flipping someone off. 030
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 27/08/2026"No you can't have it" is not a valid denial" neither is "another agency said we can't release this" or "I don't feel like it!" 010
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 27/08/2026I am once again begging Oregon's public agencies to like, have a sticky note in their records department that says "public records denials MUST CITE THE APPLICABLE EXEMPTION IN THE ORS." 152
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Our local governments have started producing AI slop images and whole email newsletters, which means I will now have to start filing public records requests for LLM prompts. What a strange time to be a journalist. 021
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 20/08/2026AHA yes, I did see a camera filming me whilst I interviewed the winner last year. 010
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 20/08/2026Wait what am I doing on Oregon Field Guide lol? 200
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 28/05/2026Occupational hazard of reporting in the town you and your family grew up in: halfway through, you find out that the interviewee dated a family member or IS a family member, both of which have happened to me multiple times. 020

Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 17/04/2026If you're wondering if shoe leather reporting still happens, I just crammed a request for more information through somebody's mail slot. 020

Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 11/12/2025I was just thinking "how would my part of Oregon handle a flood of '96?-style event?" And I'm not sure that we would do super great, to be honest! 141
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 11/12/2025This is wild. I got quoted $300 awhile back by a small Oregon town for records having to do with water rights from the 1990s and I negotiated it down to "I will sit in your conference room and photograph 300 pages on my cell phone camera for free." This is a gross abuse of public records law. 042

Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 24/10/2025Oh boy, here I go again, buying books I have no money for. 010
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 24/10/2025And so, it is my privilege to give to you a poem that first ran in the 1925 Washington County News-Times, a paper my great-grandmother was also writing for at the time. "Hallowe'en," By Verne Bright 010
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 24/10/2025He also made it to Gales Creek, writing ecstatically of Rippling Waters, where I lived. As far as I can tell, his work is largely unknown these days. His books are out of print, his life contained in a few dusty boxes in university archives. 200
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 24/10/2025One of my favorite findings from my years trawling through newspaper archives has been the poetry of Verne Bright, a Forest Grove poet, journalist, & author. A Pacific University graduate, he worked with one of my cousins at the Pacific Index, one of the oldest student newspapers in Oregon. 140
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 23/10/2025I don't take "no you can't see that" very well. 020
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 18/10/2025This definitely stretches the definition of Portland, but Jim Dandy Farm Market in Manning, just outside of Banks, has free admission, free wagon rides, a maze, and a mini haunted house. Photos by me, feel free to use 'em if wanted. www.pumpkinpatch.farm 120

Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 18/10/2025Down I fell, & when I landed, I was arms-deep in the ribcage of a half-rotted cattle carcass. It turns out, one of the steers from the farm we were sledding at had died and been buried there. Because I am not fabulously wealthy, this did not result in me dressing up as a cow and fighting criminals. 100
Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 18/10/2025You know how in the Nolan Batman films, a key part of Bruce's backstory is falling into a deep hole and being terrorized by bats? I had pretty much the same thing happen to me. I was sledding down a hill when I was about 10, and the ground gave away beneath me. 100

Chas Hundley @chashundley.bsky.social · 25/09/2025I was having anxiety about the test and my mom simply drove me there under the guise of "I need your help at WinCo" and made me take the test.
