The above quote completes this thought:
"After all, there is no position so absurd that you cannot get a great many people to assume it. Lord Maugham, a former Lord Chancellor (where do they find them?), was convinced that the decline of the Roman Empire was the result of too frequent bathing. Justinian knew there was a causal link between buggery and earthquakes..."

So the famous sentence is the conclusion of a comic list, not a standalone pronouncement. The examples are the argument.

Vidal's essay is an argument against sex laws, written during the 1964 Goldwater campaign, and Vidal's examples are a Florida anti-homosexual pamphlet and a Dallas stripper given fifteen years for marijuana because the jury disapproved of her morals.

The sentence is the punchline to a list. Vidal has just offered a Lord Chancellor who believed Rome fell from too much bathing, and the Emperor Justinian, who knew that sodomy caused earthquakes. Only then does he deliver the general claim. Without the examples, it sounds like misanthropy. With them it is an inductive argument, and a funny one, which is how Vidal preferred to win points.

Note that he does not call public opinion wrong. He calls it a chaos, meaning unsorted rather than mistaken. Superstition, misinformation, and prejudice are three different failures, and he lists them separately on purpose. His actual target is the next move: treating that mixture as a reliable guide to what the law should

From Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones (2018)

#writerslift #life #authors #love #art #coffee #diary #write #books #amwriting #quotes #jamesclear

Read alone, it sounds like a slogan about self-reliance. In place, it is something narrower and better. Clear has just described being the only junior cut from his high school varsity team, sitting in his car crying, and finishing his school career with eleven innings played. The sentence is not advice offered from the far side of success. It is what he decided while still sitting in the wreck of the thing he wanted.

Note what he does not claim. Not that he could control the outcome, not that effort guarantees anything, only that nobody else was going to do it. That is a statement about ownership, not about power. He still believed he could be a good player, which turned out to be true, but the belief and the responsibility are kept separate in the sentence, and keeping them separate is what stops it collapsing into a motivational poster.

It also sets up the book's actual argument. Atomic Habits is not about willpower or grand resolutions. It is about accumulating one-percent improvements until they compound. Taking responsibility, in that framework, means building a system rather than summoning resolve. The teenager in the car could not decide to become a college athlete. He could only decide who was going to be doing the work.

The quoted line comes out of the hospital chapters. Frank is ten, laid up with typhoid, and is befriended by Seamus, the janitor, who cannot read. Seamus memorizes poems he hears in the pub and recites them at the bedside so the boy can have them too. That is what prompts the thought. A man with no letters has furnished the inside of his head, and nobody in Limerick can repossess it.

McCourt makes the same claim twice, from opposite ends. Later, the headmaster O'Halloran tells the boys to stock their minds, that the mind is a house of treasure no one in the world can interfere with. Once from an educated man at a lectern, once from an illiterate one with a mop. Putting it in both mouths is how you know it is the book's argument and not just a good line.

Note the tense. This is not a memoirist of sixty-six looking back and drawing a lesson. It is a child in a hospital bed noticing something as it happens, in the flat, unpunctuated voice McCourt kept for the whole book. Lovely is a small word doing heavy work. A boy with no possessions has found that he owns one thing after all.

The sentence sorts decisions into two piles. Some close a door permanently, and life will hand you a steady supply of those whether you want them or not. The rest only look permanent. Mrs. Oastler is not advising courage about the first kind, which would be pointless. She is saying stop manufacturing extra ones. It is counsel about restraint.

In this particular novel, almost nobody in it takes the advice. Every major character in "Until I Find You" has been marked for life, some by ink and some by abandonment or abuse. The whole book is built on permanence: tattoos that cannot come off, a father who never came back, memories that turn out to have been lies. A warning about needless finality arrives among people already covered in it.

There is a wrinkle behind the book worth knowing. Irving wrote all eight hundred pages in first person, then judged the material too close to his own life, delayed publication, and rewrote the entire thing in third. Most writers would treat a finished manuscript as final. He treated it as one of the decisions that only looked that way.
