Part one of a series reviewing how Charleston DSA’s First Amendment Restoration Campaign links back towards a general crackdown on civil liberties in America over the past five years.

What is the 1A Ordinance?

In a 2021 session with no public input, Charleston City Council implemented this draconian ‘First Amendment Ordinance,’ which made organizing safe protests nearly impossible. Approval to exercise our Constitutional right is now entirely at the discretion of City Council and Chief of Police.

Attempts from churches to host public vigils, organizers trying to hold Free Palestine rallies, and people just wanting to express their frustration with the Trump administration have all been illegally prevented by the city or brutalized by Charleston police.

This crackdown comes as part of a broader trend of anti-free speech and peaceful assembly from not only the city of Charleston, but the county, the state, and the nation.
