Caillebotte painted this in 1892 at his home in Petit-Gennevilliers, where gardening and sailing had largely replaced exhibiting. The flat, wall-filling composition reads like a decorative panel. He died in 1894.

Vivian Maier (1926-2009) worked as a nanny in Chicago for decades, photographing the streets in her off hours. She left over 100,000 negatives, almost all unseen, until John Maloof found them at a storage auction in 2007. Her work is now celebrated worldwide.

Klimt painted "Schubert at the Piano" for the music room of Nikolaus Dumba's Vienna palace. The candlelit domestic scene, with a composer among his admirers, was an early step toward his later style. It was lost in 1945 when Schloss Immendorf burned, leaving only photographs and a color sketch.

Van Gogh painted this in 1890, in his final months at Saint-Rémy. The couple walking beneath the crescent moon echoes a scene from a Millet print he admired, which he often reworked in his own vivid color. Swirling sky, gnarled olive trees, and glowing dusk reflect his intense late style.

Van Gogh painted "Roses" in May 1890 at the Saint-Rémy asylum, just before leaving for Auvers-sur-Oise. It was a companion to his irises of the same weeks. The pink pigment has faded, so the blooms now read as pale white. He died that July.

In 1888 Van Gogh was in Arles, painting at his peak: brighter color, flatter forms, and Japanese-print cropping. Boats and shorelines were a summer subject, notably at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. The work now hangs at the Folkwang Museum in Essen, Germany.
