Are they choosing not to answer or can they not answer because it’s never crossed their minds to ask it themselves? Either is Bad, to be clear. But I wonder if they’ve drunk so much of their own Kool Aid they just have t thought people might have serious concerns

I saw Endgame Encore. It was so good to see it again and I was excited by the extra scenes, basically post credit scenes. They’re short and I’d say not critical to see before Doomsday, not least as I think they’re all clips from Doomsday. But it’s still worth seeing if you love the film.

Thank you for sharing such a lovely photo! I’ve been here all along but mostly lurking - life is busy! But in a good way. Hope all is well with you and yours - a photo from our local coast to match yours

Hive mind - my 13 yo niece is just getting into X_Men and has asked for comics for her birthday. I don’t know the X-Men stories that well, what are some good trade paperbacks I could get for her? #marvelcomics #xmen @marvelcomicshqs.bsky.social @gailsimone.bsky.social

It also struck me reading it that as well as the Big Things (which are very real) young people have much less day to day agency. They don’t go out without parents knowing what they’re doing and tracking them. They don’t even get to discover things the same way as it’s all spoonfed via the internet.

The great Ben Goldacre once said that whenever anyone says ‘Why don’t you just…’ the answer is inevitably‘It’s a bit more complicated than that’ It’s an inevitable tell of someone who doesn’t understand the detail

It’s all true, to be fair. But there is some truth in the disposable culture point too.

That is a whole other argument.. Not disagreeing btw, just limiting my ranting!

Someone pointed out to me that these days the rich no longer buy long lasting things - their tech and so on are just as enshittified as for the rest of us, but they can afford swapping all the time. Seems valid, up to a point

I would love to see the list, in hopes of some genius creative British swearing

Presumably added to the also large number of people calling him a twat? Possibly also tosser and wanker. Given the creativity of the British public I’d also hope for more words included

Assuming they have retained the most profitable routes, expanding the network to less profitable routes is going to need at the very least the subsidy to increase by quite a lot. There are real benefits to improving buses but we have to be honest that it will take money

Charis Pollard @charispollard.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Indeed. In the consultation documents for north east bus franchising (currently live) there is fare income of £116m pa against passenger journeys of £115m pa. There is other income as well as subsidies. But…

This is my last day in my current job. No idea how I feel, mostly super weird. I’m glad to be leaving and sad and excited for the new job and also scared and looking forward to a leaving do but worried about logistics and also not wanting to be the centre of attention and also what if no one cares

I know of senior Execs who get ChatGPT to summarise briefing papers for them (which are already simplified to almost extremes) and then use that for decision making. Like, they’re paid six figures to do that job. Seriously, just….do it

This is definitely one of those things that the more I read about it the less I can believe this is actually being agreed…. Like the immunity clauses!!!

That’s fair, and I really wish it was more in vogue! I’m just thinking that if this is primarily a ‘rage against everything’ vote then a clear position by Labour probably wouldn’t save them.

Charis Pollard @charispollard.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
I do agree, but I do think that a lot of these results are from people voting *against* existing parties

There is a puritanical vibe to the enduring discomfort is good narrative - which is seen in other discourses as well. And learning to cope with discomfort is indeed a good skill to have, including environmental. But that’s learned through gradual supported exposure and tools not ‘grin and bear it’

Hadn’t thought of it that way but it makes a lot of sense!

If you can’t convince your department- who you’d think really care about these issues - then you might have a problem convincing the wider public. And they’re key to making it sound credible and deliver.

Full admission: I work in civil service adjacent jobs and aspired to be Sir Humphrey… but I think that the civil service should be viewed as the first audience for a message/vision and key delivery stakeholders.

Apologies - I have now clarified. I still think the important debate - that I never see - is how we ensure inclusion at all levels regardless of performance

Charis Pollard @charispollard.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
That’s fair and I’m sorry my comment came across badly - I was trying to dismiss just talking about elite levels and focusing on all levels where this will also effectively mean a ban and that upsets me far more than any Olympic ban.
050
Charis Pollard @charispollard.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
My broader point is that the debate about elite level sports is not as relevant to most people as grass level/mid level sports and those impacts and rules deserve more thought and attention and care - which I don’t see

Sorry, I do mean to say hard to argue *assuming the science in the article is accurately described * which I am not qualified to assess but I do realise there are arguments about

Charis Pollard @charispollard.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
It’s hard to argue the point at the elite level. However more real thought needs to be put into the last sentence about how this is reflected in competitive clubs at lower levels. Trans women are often not able to compete in male clubs either because their average is not as good or for safety

I guess my question isn’t why don’t shipping companies absorb the costs, but why things won’t move and pass on the costs, via the well structured chains, to us the consumers. Is it the lack of insurance, meaning it is either illegal (or at least in contractual) to sail?

My father was an alcoholic and not always completely with it. One day he turned up to a picnic lunch really proud because he’d made mackerel paste sandwiches using olive bread he’d borrowed from the lodger. Dear reader, it was not olive bread. It was chocolate chip brioche. I am scarred

I’ve had another infuriating thought. If he’s not ‘making therapy’ he perceives LGBT wanting representation as ‘needing therapy’ instead of ‘voicing a legitimate grievance’: poor from any leader but ESPECIALLY from creators of Inside Out about how ALL your emotions, including anger, are legitimate
000
Charis Pollard @charispollard.bsky.social · 09/03/2026
An additional kicker - in the full article he also says ‘My job is to focus on making films for everyone’. So LGBT people aren’t everyone… Thanks.

I think we should definitely not make any more while male led action hero content as that’s therapy for inadequate men then! Yes, that’s an over reaction but seeing yourself represented is NOT therapy it’s just basic existing

Can I answer something instead? My nickname for James would be Armadillo, in line with the classic Daim bar adverts as he’s crunchy on the outside but we know that’s hiding a teenage girl interior… Also it’s just fun to say!

I have often felt that you can nearly always just delete “for the avoidance of doubt’ and leave the exception/statement in without the qualifier. Just as clear and stronger. Not to take away from the point that it may flag changes needed to other clauses as wells

I watched Little Shop of Horrors too young. Literally had debilitating nightmares for YEARS. Proper scared to go to sleep things. Still slightly traumatised and don’t like horror films…
