Is what one says when one wants to easily flatten concrete power differentials that exist between people facing different degrees and forms of discrimination.

"Black Lives Matter" never implied that other marginalized people don't matter. People seeking to negate its propositional value (that Black lives matter as much as other lives, which are valued and esteeemed more highly in a thoroughly anti-Black society) deliberately read it in bad faith.

Which is disingenuous of them to say, because "All Lives Matter" is a particular kind of speech-act crafted in the wake of "Black Lives Matter" specifically, by white supremacists and 'colorblind' racists, to negate it. One whose emergence from that specific speech-situation colors its meaning.

Y'all remember the Coagula from "Get Out!"? Because literally putting words in Maya Angelou's mouth with genAI to perform commodity aesthetics for an EdTech company? That feels uncanny in the same way that watching Lakeith Stanfield's character get body-puppeted by a white man's consciousness felt.

Which is to say: I was a classroom teacher before I ever played Overwatch; then becoming an Ana main made me better at cold-calling in class, and now cold-calling in class with sniper grandma FPS-vision has become useful for everything else lmao.

While working as a parking attendant over the weekend, I found myself unconsciously doin' the teacher-y cold-calling thing whenever a driver would slow down or look over. Which is funny because in the classroom, I used to call it FPS-vision: see movement, snap aim, point finger, "was that a hand?"

By that last thing, I mean: if you're gonna use chatGPT to try to help you brainstorm something or "fix" your writing, I need to make sure this is clear: Literally not only you, but every human and non-human is better off in the long-run if you ask a human being to help you with it instead.

I'm also stating upfront that I fully need to now shift my focus away from long-term career thinking toward short term "eat tomorrow, pay rent this month" work. So any immediate work involving copy-editing, writing support, or especially any way I can do a thing you'd otherwise ask chatGPT to do.

This isn't the singular absolute worst year of my life (2015 takes that distinction, with 2025 being a close second) but it is certainly *a worst year*. And I really need *something* to give, in terms of employment and survivability at least, if nothing else.

My dad ended up passing away from heart failure caused by lung cancer in late July, and I ended up having to plan a bus trip back to my home state for his funeral that ultimately fell through because of fires and travel delays. Couldn't refund the ticket for the first leg of the trip.

That's just on the money front. I've mentioned here and there in passing, and on a stream whose vod I didn't publish, but this has also been a crazy year for losing people. Early July I lost a good friend who was my age to very similar circumstances to those that almost took me out last year.

Since mid-2024, I'd been applying for jobs in other lines of work to try to pivot away from the work I was in, but I doubled down during summer 2025 looking for some kind of off-ramp and still couldn't make anything happen. Even with insurance, those medical expenses sorta hit like a truck.

To give a little rundown of what's happened: 2024-2025, I hit hard burnout, kinda lost any sense of attachment to life for a bit, and stopped taking good care of myself in the midst of working. Ended up almost dying and wound up in the hospital with kidney failure July 2025.

It also just sucks to never know what or whether any given investment of time (at a moment when time is so very scarce) is worth it I haven't streamed largely because it felt like a bad use of my time while ruin was looming over the horizon. But ruin is here, and not streaming got me nothing.

This entire 3 year span has sorta been wearing me down to a finely ground powdered version of myself, with the working situation being only one (not insubstantial) part of it, and I really really need something to give. This year in particular has felt like loss after loss after loss.

If these chatbots were conscious (they are 100% not) all they do is kill kids, make CSAM, scam people, hack companies. Not some kind soul deserving of anything. But of course AI systems are inanimate objects owned by known associates of pedophiles and serial scammers. So it actually makes sense.

I think what I find really depressing about AI in higher education is how so many people didn't even wait for the evidence/research before we decided on telling students "how to use AI responsibly" which often includes things like checking grammar, and obviously, we shouldn't have been

Did you know that even prompting an LLM to edit your grammar might alter the semantic meaning of your text and remove your human voice? If you're in Bergen on Friday September 4 you can hear Isadora White and Marwa Abdulhai present their recent paper on this. They took human-written short essays, asked LLMs to revise them and found significant changes well beyond just copyediting. This is a large-scale computational study, but the image shared here shows two examples of how this happens.

We'll also have talks by John Gallagher, whose newsletter on AI and writing I read religiously, and by Rashid Mustafin, a PhD student at NHH, and Pedro Jacobetty. And before these public talks the AI STORIES team gets to spend two days in a workshop with these and other brilliant people - I'm so excited!

I'm not exaggerating when I say that the most important things in my life got subverted when generative AI became a readily-accessible resource. The job I loved; the baseline of where ever-present instances of mundane language are coming from; the reliability and trustworthiness of communication.

Great piece in the Chronicle about AI & writing with an especially important section quoting Prof. David Perry @lollardfish.bsky.social www.chronicle.com/article/prof...
But to David Perry, associate director of undergraduate studies in the history department at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and the author of a book on public scholarship, using AI to “edit” or “condense” is synonymous with using it to write. Cutting down an article or generalizing it for a broader audience is “what writing and thinking is about,” he added.

“Writing complicated things that are accessible to a public audience and that are short enough for public-audience attention spans is hard — it is harder, in many ways, than writing at length and writing only for your 20 most compatible colleagues,” Perry said. “It’s just a practice. You have to decide to put in the work.”

The work of being an academic, Perry said, is to make complicated things coherent. Michael Socolow, chair of the communications and journalism department at the University of Maine at Orono, agreed, calling it a “cop-out” for a writer to say they “only” used AI for the basic mechanics of composition. He added that he’s concerned about what senior academics model for both junior academics and their students when using AI.

Thing is, even if I *knew* this most unlikely of futures was sure to come, I would only be somehow *more* contemptuous toward AI in the here and now than I already am. Like, many of us do, in fact, have a whole history of ancestral resistance to oppressors doing shit exactly like that.
