@hamilcar117 Dans la situation actuelle un prélèvement SEPA coûte toujours exactement 0,35 € en frais.

@bjn The questions on the current and future costs of the various sources of electricity have been asked and answered. The French electricity grid operator ran a lot of simulations and published a lengthy report answering those questions […]

@bjn Thanks for the clarification. Capital costs are influenced by markets and political decisions. A simple construction delay can significantly increase the capital cost even if it doesn't change the construction cost. The numbers I used are construction costs. They come from EDF's records […]

@bjn It looks like you're comparing the latest and most powerful reactors with the earliest and least powerful ones, without even normalizing for the difference in power output. For the 1300MW and 1450MW series of reactors, the construction costs decreased by a little more than 20% after the […]

Today I realized #Go and #Rust both have panics instead of exceptions and both originate from the second half of the 2000s. These facts are now mentioned in gato-lang.dev If you have experience with Go or Rust, I'm interested in your thoughts on the lack of exceptions in these […]

If you have an Intel Raptor Lake system and you're in the northern hemisphere, chances are that your machine is crashing more often because of the summer heat. I know because I can literally see which EU countries have been affected by heat waves by looking at the locales of Firefox crash […]

If like me you still use #Firefox and you find the new way of selecting a search engine in the URL bar to be annoyingly inefficient, you can get the old way back by toggling the browser.urlbar.scotchBonnet.enableOverride setting to false.
Screenshot of a Firefox window with the Advanced Preferences (about:config) page opened in its only tab, showing the browser.urlbar.scotchBonnet.enableOverride setting toggled to false.Screenshot of a Firefox window showing the result of typing a random word in the URL bar when the browser.urlbar.scotchBonnet.enableOverride setting is toggled to false.

@collectifission That downside isn't inherent to the dominance of nuclear power in a grid. It wouldn't exist if there was enough storage capacity (pumped storage, hydrogen, batteries) to absorb the nuclear surplus.

@collectifission I would add that French nuclear reactors are slowed down a lot more because of insufficient electricity demand than because of heatwaves. They've been outputting significantly less than they could have for more than two months because there isn't enough demand. Source: my own […]

Loading the entire #Python 3.13 standard library on #Linux results in more than 36 megabytes of memory being allocated for more than 247 thousand objects. Strings rank first in both number of instances (82 thousand) and memory usage (7.5 megabytes). 8.9% of those strings are duplicates of other […]

I've just published a new Python module: github.com/Changaco/python-memory-i… It's an interesting little tool that tries to find all the Python objects in memory and compiles statistics on them. Did you know that Python creates quite a few […] [Original post on mastodon.cloud]
Screenshot of the top of an HTML page generated by the memory_inventory module, containing a table listing the classes that could be optimized by giving them slots. The third and sixth rows of the table are for “classmethod” and “staticmethod”, two builtins usually called as decorators.Screenshot of the top of another HTML page generated by the memory_inventory module, containing a table listing strings that appear multiple times in memory. The first string in the table mentions PEP 585. Its 44 duplicates waste 6.38 kilobytes of RAM. The second string is “encodings”. Its 122 duplicates waste 6.1 kilobytes of RAM.

Today is the 8th anniversary of @Liberapay's launch. Coincidentally, I have an announcement to make. I'm looking for someone to open a new chapter in the project's history by becoming its second maintainer. That doesn't mean it's a programming job, although help in that area is always welcome […]
