These gaps matter 🌍 – biodiversity data fuels conservation 🐢, climate models 🌡️, and ocean planning 🌊. But if your model is trained on fish 🐟 in shallow waters, it probably won’t help protect deep-sea invertebrates 🪸 3,000 meters below. We’re building global policy on patchy foundations 🧱❓.

Deep Hotspots of Biodiversity | Canyons, Vents, and Seeps of the Chile Margin
Join the #ChileanMargin2024 expedition team aboard Research Vessel Falkor (too) as they explore diverse underwater ecosystems along Chile's coast. They are exploring methane seeps and submarine canyons, both different hidden biodiversity hotspots deep within the ocean. Using advanced technology, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), core samplers, and methane detectors, scientists document rare sights like gas bubble streams and thriving microbial life—organisms that rely on chemosynthesis, rather than sunlight, for survival. This groundbreaking expedition provides insights into the ocean's role in climate change, carbon capture, and our planet’s complex ecological connections.
