Authorising this horrifically insulting response to a case like this is imo a resignation matter.

Do we think that they're going to consider being a magistrate as a qualifying law-related activity?
A person may not be appointed as a senior adjudicator unless- (a) they are-
i)
a barrister in England and Wales,
(ii)
a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales,
(iii) a person authorised by the Chartered Institute of Legal
Executives to practise as a chartered legal executive,
(iv)
an advocate or solicitor in Scotland, or
(v) a barrister or solicitor in Northern Ireland,
and have practised as such for at least two years, or
(b) they have experience in law-related activities which, in the opinion of the Chief Executive, makes them as suitable for appointment as if they
fell within paragraph (a).

Last July no decision making unit in the Home Office was meeting quality standards. The directive from on high? Do it faster.
There appeared to be different messages about the priority of quality coming from different
parts of the system. Senior managers stated that both the quantity and quality of asylum
casework were important and should be equally prioritised. However, within DMUs, targets,
performance management, and incentives emphasising productivity had been reinforced and
increased, with little equivalent emphasis on quality. For example, in July 2025, productivity
targets were increased, which was later supported by a time-and-motion study. However, there
was no change or emphasis on quality aspects despite no core DMU meeting its quality targets
at that point.

This bit in the piece is scary because it shows that the mere threat of bonkers legal claims by well funded hate groups is scaring organisations into changing perfectly legal schemes designed to reduce discrimination.
Other organisations told the Guardian they had amended their positive action internship schemes to avoid such legal action, by removing mention of ethnicity from the titles and limiting the length of
internships.

It also helps if you read the Equality Act
(1) This section applies if a person (P) reasonably thinks that-
(a) persons who share a protected characteristic suffer a disadvantage connected to the characteristic, (b) persons who share a protected characteristic have needs that are different from the needs of persons who do
not share it, or
(c) participation in an activity by persons who share a protected characteristic is disproportionately low.
(2) This Act does not prohibit P from taking any action which is a proportionate means of achieving the aim of—
(a) enabling or encouraging persons who share the protected characteristic to overcome or minimise that
disadvantage,
(b) meeting those needs, or
(c) enabling or encouraging persons who share the protected characteristic to participate in that activity.

Found this in the archives. Just imagine.
A copy of the Immigration Act 1971 inscribed and signed by Gerald Kaufman, former Labour Shadow Home Secretary with a commitment to repeal it.

Here it is in black and white. But people don't need to read the refugee convention to want refugees to feel safe to build lives here, to integrate into society, to have jobs and homes. And they and their children can't do that if they're being threatened with deportation every few years.
Article 34 - Naturalization The Contracting States shall as far as possible facilitate the assimilation and naturalization of refugees. They shall in particular make every effort to expedite naturalization proceedings and to reduce as far as possible the charges and
costs of such proceedings.

Exactly, this has to be the starting point of any further reform.
A more credible approach would start with recognising three things. First, that migration is a structural feature of a modern, open economy, not a temporary aberration.
Second, that the costs and benefits of migration depend overwhelmingly on domestic policy choices-in housing, public services, labour-market regulation and integration. Third, that political trust is more likely to be rebuilt through competence, honesty and institutional

Ah yes if black and brown people throw a party we need to scan their faces. White supremacists organising a hate march do not need to worry about their privacy. The police have them covered. This btw is also why everyone arguing for digital id in this country is either naive or dangerous.

Police are not using live facial recognition in its policing of the 'Unite the Kingdom' demonstration which is beginning on London's south bank, reports the PA news agency.
It said:
• We're using a mobile CCTV van to help monitor the build up of crowds. Officers have been asked if it's using 'live facial recognition' - we can confirm it is not.
The live facial recognition technology - which captures people's faces in real-time CCTV
cameras - was used in the policing operation at the Notting Hill carnival.

Yeah promising to do evil things that no one believes you want as badly as the other guys is not attractive to your base or the other guys. If nothing else because it is the behaviour of a sad sack loser and people really feel that in their bones. Thanks Zoe. bsky.app/profile/zoej...
The US electorate did not reject an open, welcoming and positive campaign towards immigration in favour of Trumpist deportations. They never had that choice. They chose between two brands of politicians offering sealed borders, detention camps, and high-speed deportations - they just believed one side meant it more and was more likely to deliver.
Now cast your mind to the UK. If both Labour and Conservatives run on a tough-on-migration message, who will come across as more committed?
Who would you believe?

Making myself mad by imagining what the SEO optimised version of this recipe introduction looks like.
Paragraph from Marcella Hazan reading : Before the student riots of the late 1970s demolished it, the Cantunzein, in Bologna, was probably the greatest pasta restaurant that has ever existed.
Among the 30 or 40 pastas it served, the most sublime was called scrigno di venere, Venus's jewel case. The 'case' was formed by a small handkerchief-sized wrapper of yellow pasta pulled around a collection of edible jewels: green fettuccine, ham, wild mushrooms, truffles.
