grain camera take 2: xpan edition the screen tries to replicate the hasselblad xpan viewfinder, dials, and lcds as much as possible. there's also a film strip view to review photos. made with an esp32 and 5mp camera took it out to the enchantments this weekend. pretty epic it all worked

Amazing! The xiao is pretty sweet

the cameras aren't as high quality as you can get on the pi platform (at least what i've found so far) but 5mp might be good enough for the grain. also a lot of the esp32 builds come with everything you need for a camera: power, rtc, accelerometer etc

trick to building hardware with robots, have them write wiring diagrams for you in html also the waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-3.49 is very cool, turning it into a tiny xpan camera (hopefully) esp32 seems like a way better platform for grain cam than pi and easier to find in stock

you can hardly use flickr now without getting the upgrade to pro popup every few photos in the carousel 😒

Chad @chadtmiller.com · 21/09/2026
lol until you find out a pi is 10x as much as it's supposed to be or out of stock and you close the tab

a few pics from grain camera this weekend. honestly not too bad. this is really just a pi hq, pi 3a+, and a bunch of adafruit breakout boards.
100
Chad @chadtmiller.com · 21/09/2026
Yeah took a bunch of tries to get all the breakout boards to fit right. Even then getting all the wiring out of the way to get the back panel on is tricky

doesn't do video yet, but maybe? i think it would be cool to double as a stream.place cam. video quality probably won't be the best but at least it will be something. it uses the pi hq

messing around with a grain camera prototype. native atproto support. photos sync to your pds whenever it connects to wifi.

you need a device to develop for android, its part of the verfication process

Thanks!

I also had to do a closed beta period with at least 12 users for two weeks because I registered it as a solo developer and not an organization. Went through one review phase, needed to publish a dedicated page for a policy on child safety and then it was approved for production.

A lot of patience 🫠 It helped that I already had an iOS app so translating that to kotlin was pretty easy. You have to have a physical Android device, I just bought a cheap 2025 moto g on amazon. The play console sucks but you figure it out eventually.

You can recreate the post or you can do it manually with an ai agent pretty easily if you give them an app password. Here’s what you have to do tangled.org/strings/did:... We don’t have edit because it’s difficult to moderate etc

yeah i went from conductor to paseo to herdr. herdr is nice because it's mostly out of the way but managing all worktrees can get a little crazy sometimes

If there’s a preowned one marked as “acceptable” it’s basically brand new and even cheaper

I bought a moto g for grain android development for around $130. Pixel is too expensive for testing imo a.co/d/0bvBEtNR

trying to follow bsky patterns as much as possible. there's moderation labels and you can self label a gallery. still need to add preferences so you can choose to filter out adult content or not

I mean wasn't that initial intent of instagram? I think gearing it towards photography helps keep out all the other junk like memes, photos of twitter posts, etc you find on instagram nowadays. Trying to target anyone with a camera really and that includes the one that's always in your pocket

@bradwenner.photo fixed! you might have to delete a duplicate gallery you made probably because it wasn't syncing. should continue to work now!

let me check

yeah kotlin, I like Material You. I feel like a lot of people want some sort of customization anyways and it's nice that it's built in and thought about at the framework level

Chad @chadtmiller.com · 23/08/2026
hmm I'll dig around more and see if there's anything else going on

I feel like the @grain.social android app might be better than iOS 😢 Native Android dev feels less abstract to me than iOS and everything just slots in nicely with the design language.

Chad @chadtmiller.com · 22/08/2026
it might still be less strict on adult stuff, i just find the whole process more cumbersome than ios 😅
230
Chad @chadtmiller.com · 22/08/2026
oof, getting an app in the google play store is exhausting, so many screens and questions and also a full on background check of the developer essentially i know this probably for the better but for everyone who demands your app runs on android, just know that its more complicated than ios IMO
