Since the purpose and efficacy of Black protest is the subject of the day here’s some reflections on the Negro Silent Protest in response to the pogrom in East St. Louis

Until the arrival of that freer world, though, marchers tarried daringly in the contemporary one, replete with the threat that surrounded and structured their daily lives. This threat and the struggle to navigate and overcome it were evinced in the multilayered undertones of death and resiliency that permeated the march but defied exhaustive representation. Indeed, the marchers' silence also indicated the impossibility of ever fully invoking the dead or articulating the experiences of anti-Black onslaught, both its trauma and the profundity of efforts to resist it, which would always remain to an extent unspeakable if not unknowable.
Such a feeling is captured in James Weldon Johnson's inability to describe the significance of the demonstration to his colleague and collaborator W.
E.B. Du Bois, the NAACP director of publicity and research:

Still despite claims that the march was "epoch-making, its actual efficacy in bettering the lives of African Americans remained uncertain.' Cayton's Weekly, for instance, argued that the paraders risked reifying racial castes in their admirable efforts to tarry in the horrors of racism and in asking for legislative protections "in the name of the race"66 The march had undoubtedly made an impact, but ensuring the realization of its transformative potential required continued agitation.

When I was reading through the surveillance policies and practices of MPD I was particularly struck by the attention they spent on vigils of people killed by the police so I’m very excited to read this book.
