Started The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell 📚 This is only my third Arthurian legend book. It seems well-regarded but I am wondering if it will hold up to The Bright Sword which was amazing.

Ever feel like the authour is trying to pick a fight with you, Dear Reader?
Highlighted passage from Roberto Bolaño’s 2666: “What a sad paradox, thought Amalfitano. Now even bookish Pharmacists are afraid to take on the great, imperfect, torrential works, books that blaze paths into the unknown.”

This photo came up in my memories: a massive tapestry that took 1.5 years to complete and depicts 38 kinds of flowers. I wrote a bit about the Kyoto State Guest House a few years ago (with photos of its many modern treasures) chadkohalyk.com/2022/09/2…
A vibrant and intricate tapestry showcasing various blooming flowers in shades of red, white, purple, and blue against a textured, multi-colored background.

Home river (The Kicking Horse). Absolutely freezing glacier water that empties into the Columbia just a little further along past that green pedestrian bridge. Pretty high and silty due to hot temps causing runoff

I migrated from 1Password to BitWarden, installed Linux on my MacBook, then went for a walk in the forest around the lake with the fam. How is your Labour Day weekend going?

Finished Capitalist Realism Is There No Alternative? 📚 Wish I’d read this when it came out but tbh I don’t think I would have got it at the time. Can see why it was popular, but also why it was dismissed. Don’t usually read “cultural criticism” but was a fun lens to explore political philosophy

Made it to 100 pages of 893 in 2666 by Roberto Bolaño 📚 Wow, the detail, the sidebars, the swerves and yaw. I can see how this could be tiring, but so far loving it.

"When man uses the vernacular to create an alternative to that of internationalism or modernism he possesses a living environment which is authentic and rooted in its indigenous culture." Yes, I am reading and thinking about commons management and cooperatives in the vernacular.

Finished The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman 📚 I think this book is a masterpiece…? I can’t completely tell since I listened to it and the dreamy sequences let the audio get away from me. But I saw masterful craftwork in the structure and themes and turns of phrase. Someday I will re-read in text.

Took a walking tour of the Vancouver Japanese Language School neighbourhood. Founded in 1906 this new building was erected in 1928 designed by the same firm that made Burrard Bridge and the Art Museum. Mosaics commemorate the internment in 1942 and race riots of 1907.

Pretty smoky in Kelowna today for Day 1 of our summer holiday. Here is a comparison of the view with a shot from the past

Why? 🤔 "balancing technical expertise with management and people skills across a quirky distributed group. The operations-and-people-ops angle seemed to fit." 👟
