My colleague Ashley Walters wrote about the increasing number of American Jewish students considering a place in the South as they make their college plans. It’s something we see in our classrooms every day here at the College of Charleston. theconversation.com/as-jewish-co...

As Jewish college students look South, some discover a long but overlooked history
For many people, Jewish American history is synonymous with northern cities like New York and Chicago. But the South played an important role, especially in the early 1800s.

As a recent first time author I gotta say Kevin opens that box at not-my-first-book speeds. No tearing, no cutting himself with the knife, no throwing the packaging. This is a touch more professional than I did it.

If the NewBooksNetwork interview is anything to go by, this book is important both for its own topic and for thinking about issues such as gender and representation in other genocides, including Armenia and Palestine. And the OA version is actual in useable formats:

I am still listening to this but the part where @chadgibbs101.bsky.social discusses how the memorial at Treblinka forces the visitor to envision what the camp would have looked like and the way survivors are frequently asked to draw maps during their testimony is so striking

Watching this video from the same man who just stopped the promotion of every woman candidate for admiral does more to demonstrate why we need to fight for women’s and gender studies programs than I ever could.

These are sailors who have already been quantified on every conceivable metric and approved by a promotion board This is pure sex discrimination. It's axiomatic for Hegseth that women aren't worthy so if they get superior scores, it must have been because of DEI.

📢 Once more for the people in the back: - Most [more than 95%] of archives have not been digitized. - Most of humanity's knowledge and memory is *not* reachable by LLMs. - Believing that AI can provid you with comprehensive, definitive, "intelligent" results is folly.

New Treblinka research uncovers forgotten role of women in 1943 death camp revolt
Apart from two female survivors, all testimony about Treblinka came from male inmates. In a new book, historian Chad S.A. Gibbs restores Jewish women's overlooked place in camp resistance

A superb example of first-rate scholarship that expertly blends theory with historical evidence to expose the wider context of Jewish agency, both male and female, by those who enabled and conducted this iconic act of Jewish resistance under the most extreme circumstances.” — Edward B. Westermann. “Through his exploration of the role that masculinity played in the resistance, Gibbs is able to uncover the hitherto almost completely ignored subject of women’s experiences at Treblinka. This is an extraordinary feat and one that is genuinely exciting.” — Zoë Waxman

80 years later, scholarship is breaking silence on women’s suffering and strength at Treblinka – including their role in its uprising
Topics such as sexual assault have been difficult for survivors and historians to write about, even decades after the war.

No book is going to turn kids into someone else. But books will regularly show kids other people like them and show those kids they're not alone. And they'll show kids other types of people who also exist. There is a large proportion of the population who are terrified of this.

June 11, 1942 Herbert Baum commits suicide in custody. A resistance fighter against National Socialism and a central figure of the "Herbert Baum Group," which was predominantly composed of Jewish youth. #otd #history #resistance
June 11, 1942: Herbert Baum commits suicide in custody. A resistance fighter against National Socialism and a central figure of the "Herbert Baum Group," which was predominantly composed of Jewish youth. At times, the group included up to 100 young people who engaged in discussion groups, distributed anti-Nazi leaflets, supported Jewish forced laborers, and helped Jews go into hiding to avoid deportation. Following an arson attack on the anti-communist propaganda exhibition "The Soviet Paradise," Baum and about 50 members of the group were arrested. Some were sentenced to death or sent to concentration camps. Baum himself took his own life on June 11, 1942, while in custody. The memorial stone in Berlin's Lustgarten, commemorating the attack by the "Herbert Baum Group," lists 28 victims.
