Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Braved football crowds, mini-open-air raves, and an absurd pro-monarchy demo - nothing stops me from getting to this Schoenberg tonight! 041
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 19/09/2026In case you thought the Victorians had a monopoly on ugly sentimentality, here’s a Melchior de la Mars painting of MM from c.1620. 010
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 19/09/2026On left, Savoldo’s richly curtained MM; on right, not MM - instead that’s Mary of Egypt unknown painter c.1430. 120
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Monumental Mary Magdalene exhibition just opened at Städel Museum. Works from c.1100 to this century exploring the overlapping myths of arguably the second most persistently represented fictional character in western culture. (relief carving from Salerno cathedral, El Greco, Béraud, Böcklin). 140

Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Derek vs Derek sounds full of hope, showing that an obstinate uneducated reactionary can eventually be shown how a better path exists. 000
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 15/09/2026In 1832, workers in the Jainzen Valley were still subject to forced labour, forced tithes, working as subsistence farmers, in dangerous mining, or used as cheap labour building luxury hotels for rich people to “claim” the view of the valley. Makes the painting/its presentation quite disingenuous. 010
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Historically-interesting Waldmüller landscapes at NG. Vibrant colours, odd brush technique. Striking composition in ‘Waterfall in Jainzen Valley’, 1832. Annoyed by forelock-tugging labels pompously announcing “this was entitled rich person x’s favourite view”. 110

Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Wide-ranging survey of Japanese women photographers since 1950. Good balance of genres & styles, though inevitably few works by each given space at Photographers’ Gallery. Not surprising, though still appalling, that a *40-volume* survey of “Japanese photography” in the 1990s only included men. 130
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Hi @britishmuseum.bsky.social it looks like the metal bar in front of the display case would prevent a wheelchair user even from getting anywhere close to the tapestry - is my interpretation correct of the image as posted today by Director Cullinan? 000
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 04/09/2026There’s also question of display case signage, ideally tshould be on front edge of case at 45° and not in the case itself. It is complicated as you note for delicate objects, but I’m annoyed in this instance as I corresponded with the Museum and discussed in a phone call with them nearly a year ago. 010
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 04/09/2026But in this case as the entire Tapestry appears to be nearly flat, I’m very concerned that many wheelchair users will see next to nothing. 110
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Also depends on the detail in the object, fine detail needs to be close to the front edge of the display, or in the right place on an incline. The difficult issue is for those with neck damage who are unable to tilt or turn their heads. 110
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 04/09/2026There’s a range of options including the height above floor of the top of a display case, using actual tables allowing wheelchairs to roll underneath (maybe those two are not compatible), shallowness of case, using a slight incline display where possible, lighting/glass etc. 210
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 04/09/2026I first raised this with @britishmuseum.bsky.social on 7 September 2025, following Director Cullinan’s use of the term “table” for the planned display. 110
Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Waiting for response from @britishmuseum.bsky.social regarding Tapestry visibility for wheelchair users. Initial media images suggest the display is near-horizontal, which rules out visibility for anyone with C1-C4 cervical injuries, with MND, or otherwise in a chair and unable to move their neck. 240

Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Grande left the cast some weeks ago, and hopefully she’s getting some good professional health support. J Bailey has now also dropped out. Huge opportunity for some lesser known actors to step in and smash it…out of the park (as they say, though I don’t use that phrase). 210

Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 30/08/2026I’ve only partly listened to the 5th, but I’m getting that same impression. There’s a passage at 2:26 in the second movement where the portamenti down to/up from the grace notes sounds like a drunken ondes player. Pity, as there are some gorgeous timbres generally. 210

Andrew Mitchell @chaconato.bsky.social · 03/08/2026I couldn’t make that evening unfortunately. The lack of audience-building at Southbank means such performances usually have only one evening; wish it were otherwise. And happy to be convinced by a visual creator who does understand the music. 110
