My friend Kari Shleher at UNM and her coauthors just published a new paper on sourcing azurite. At Ancestral Puebloan sites, we find it as little spherical concretions and of course as pigments. Link: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Little fluffballs outside the kitchen window. It's been cooling off fast in the evening this week.
Two sweet mourning doves sitting on a wooden board, all fluffed up.

When I got assigned my new office a couple weeks ago, I ended up with a nasty stained desk chair, but somehow it’s incredibly comfortable for my bad back. So I bought this cheapo cover for it and now it’s quite fabulous.

I love today's daily poem
A poem called Autumn by Jane Hirshfield

Again the wind
flakes gold-leaf from the trees
and the painting darkens—
as if a thousand penitents
kissed an icon
till it thinned
back to bare wood,
without diminishment.

Facebook reminded me that a year ago, I accepted this award from the American Association for State and Local History, for the museum's maritime studies journal I helped develop and that I edited. A month later, I was among 21 people laid off. The journal was abandoned after 3 issues.

Monet's Jerusalem Artichoke Flowers is at the National Gallery. I used to have a poster of this, many years ago, so I was excited when someone gave us some tubers to grow them.

Our Jerusalem artichokes (aka sunchokes) are amazing right now. They’re taller than me! We started with a handful of tubers two years ago, they spread wildly. A wonderful native plant in N. America and the tubers are edible.
Yellow flowers on tall stems. They look a bit like sunflowers but with yellow centers.

My life is insane but I was somehow able to make some time for classical music at Yale tonight

One of my students in the archaeological theory seminar brought some Wisconsin copper for show and tell today, in honor of reading Binford on the old copper complex.
