Petraeus visited with Graham regularly since, recently hosting Graham for dinner when he was closing in on the WH green lighting the Russia sanctions bill. “He was as focused as ever on trying to figure out how to help Ukraine. He was exploring every diabolically clever method to do that."

Graham talked about his political transformation after the 2015 bid. He and Trump had traded brutal attacks, but Graham made concessions to keep shaping foreign policy. Petraeus: "We talked about it privately and he said, ‘look, General, understand, this is what I have to do.’”

Petraeus, who led U.S. forces in Iraq, said Graham had “extraordinary insights” after his first stint. The Air Force colonel and JAG had focused on detention facilities in southern Iraq. "After the first one, I said, 'Come any time you can, we'll put you to good work.’”

Petraeus told the Pentagon during that middle-of-the-night call in Spring 2007 he didn’t want to have a high-profile member of Congress in harm’s way. Armed militants were fighting back. “It was very, very violent. This was the last thing we needed. But they were insistent.”

Petraeus coined the inseparable Graham, late Sens. John McCain and Joe Lieberman 'the three amigos.' It was inscribed on this photo together he gifted each after landing at HQ in Kabul. Petraeus thought the Iraq war zone was no place for Graham, the group’s most junior member.
