I wrote about the late, great Rev. James Lawson, his posthumous memoir, and the question of nonviolence in movements for social transformation. Lawson did more to advance the cause of human freedom than most; may he receive the wider recognition he so richly deserves jacobin.com/2026/08/jame...

That’s a very good book. If you’ve never read it, check out this one too. Lots of great material on the contributions SP members (including Harrington) made to the civil rights movement. Another aspect of DSA’s (pre)history that’s often misunderstood or simply overlooked.

Losing voters to the grave and not replacing them with new ones is the really big problem for Euro center-left parties like Germany’s SPD, not losing voters to parties like the AfD. Yet they keep trying to “win back” radical right voters and keep declining. They can’t seem to help themselves.

Too bad this year’s Rangers didn’t even make the playoffs - just imagine what a repeat of the insane joint Knicks-Rangers finals run of 1994 would have been like. The Blueshirts brought it home to MSG in ‘94. Can the Knickerbockers do it in ‘26? We’ll find out soon enough.

Chris Maisano @cgmaisano.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
The ‘94 Rangers reunited players from the Edmonton Oilers’ glory years: Messier, Graves, Anderson, Beukeboom, Lowe, MacTavish. The ‘26 Knicks have 2016 Villanova champs Brunson, Hart, and Bridges (sorry, Donte, we miss you). Oilers East then, Nova Knicks now.

For both teams, a key acquisition changed the course of the franchise. For the Rangers, that was the 1991 trade for Mark Messier. For the Knicks, it’s the 2022 signing of Jalen Brunson. Messier captained the Blueshirts to the Cup 3 years later. Captain Brunson has the Knicks in the finals after 4.

Let’s start with the droughts. The ‘94 Rangers broke the Curse of 1940, ending a notorious 54-year drought that tortured generations of Rangers fans. The ‘26 Knicks are poised to win the team’s first title since 1973, a drought that’s tortured Knicks fans for 53 years. Not identical, but close.

If the 2025-2026 Knicks take it all the way, they’ll share some uncanny similarities with the last team to bring a championship to Madison Square Garden: the 1993-1994 New York Rangers.

All I will say is that today's results are the very predictable outcome of Labour's strategic decisions. Most of them without any pressure to do so. This is true for both the big losses to the Greens and the normalization and legitimation of Reform.

Like others, Starmer’s Labour has tried to tack rightward on issues like immigration to undercut the right’s appeal, but it just doesn’t seem to work. They end up alienating progressive voters they need while failing to win “back” voters they may have never had in the first place.

Important lessons on how to interpret the local election results in the UK next week. Especially - saying this from experience - Reform winning in places that used to be Labour strongholds does not mean that Labour has actually lost voters to Reform. That‘s an ecological fallacy.

Britain’s electoral system propped up Labour and Tories for many years but they too are falling victim to the relentless fragmentation of today’s politics. Hasn’t happened in the US yet because the presidential system is so constraining, but things are clearly brittle here too. (2/2)

The dilemma facing all center-left parties: turn right on social-cultural issues and turn off progressive voters you need to win (while failing to stem the radical right’s appeal). Or turn to the left on economics, and pick a fight with powerful interests you don’t want to have. (1/2)
