Obsession does make Nikki's erratic behavior look conventionally "hysterical." Do you think the film reconsiders this trope or does the film repeat it, adapting it to current worries about "dating," as several reviewers and writers have observed? How does Bear fit into this representation?

"Imbalance" might exist in any relationship, whether that is based on gender difference or not. As you're researching, do you see examples (and analyses of examples) of how anime that challenge or otherwise interrogate how "imbalance" might be understood, assumed, represented, or resisted?

Thank you for this definition. How might such prescriptive storytelling steps be particular to his genre, or how might hey be like other kinds of storytelling? How might Kurt Angle be original or generic?

Good idea to narrow your focus. Why might the "promos" be compelling for your readers, to support what point or observation about Kurt Angel as a specific character in this universe that values repetition and character types?

This is a good summary. What might your research suggest about this phenomenon, beyond its existence? For instance, what might you be learning about the cultural or political context for the popularity of the formula?

Appreciate that the answer isn't "simple." But the pattern Kelly describes is real; viewers, critics, distributors, and fan communities sometimes react based on expectations. Many not-so-good, unoriginal movies can make money, in part bc they deliver to expectations (franchises, looking at you).

Likely true (lazy writing), and, also, topical (generating attention).

What might we say about how this trope (girls possessed) reveals and shapes cultural structures? And, btw: I knew Linda Blair while she was making this movie. (I trained her horse; she was nice; her parents were crazy.)

This is fascinating. In the olden days, when people watched TV, the increased volume for ads aspired to demand attention; today's TV shows run ads during the show (picture in picture as well as all kinds of product placements). People spend so much time conniving how to make $.

Do you have ideas about what's holding casting directors (or anyone else) back? Obviously, racism and Western-centrism. What other elements are at work? This comment is general but true: “There’s loads of South Asian talent, but we’re expected to water it down..." www.voicemag.uk/feature/1522...

Good point, and what's the comparison? Are recent DCOMs using compiled STs or ineffective songs (songwriters) or not enough songs or something else?
000
cfuchstv2.bsky.social @cfuchstv2.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Good question to raise, and this makes the DCOMs like so much of the industry at this point, so devoted to franchises, sequels and remakes. For example: variety.com/2026/film/bo...

Brody is a thoughtful + knowledgeable writer (he's apparently seen *every* movie ever made). Appreciate that he includes "critics" as interpreters (we might think of all consumers as "critics"). Not sure that this list is determinative, but it's very helpful for the conversation.

Good background: does Kurt Angle's performance challenge or conform to what precedes his participation?
000
cfuchstv2.bsky.social @cfuchstv2.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Good history. As your research proceeds, reporting Kurt Angle's bio can inform the developing argument, and you can share that process in your annotations.

Good source. And.. going forward (not this second), as we research, each piece will help to refine the topic and argument. We can articulate that narrowing process in the annotations.

cfuchstv2.bsky.social @cfuchstv2.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Good one. And, all kinds of questions re the genre, including, how is the threat (monster) external and internal at the same time? Lots of writing about this genre, so your research will lead to a narrowed focus for the argument (as we know, "history" is not an argument).

cfuchstv2.bsky.social @cfuchstv2.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Good general start. It's hard to imagine an artist for whom this is not the case (life influences art). Looking forward to the specific direction your research might take you.

To confirm: mid-level = budgets, not names? And maybe, broadly, defined by genre (character-driven in a specific way?). Here's why I'm asking: we might say that Oppenheimer is "character-driven." And Peter Weir and Robin Williams were kind of big names back in the day.

cfuchstv2.bsky.social @cfuchstv2.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Good question. Let's see if we can refine the topic. Are we looking at all TV franchises? Other kinds of franchises? NCIS as an example of a franchise? Are we looking into studio documents or analyzing a cultural phenomenon or something else?
