More on John Henry, from The Republic for Which It Stands (White, 2017)

Henry was tried the same day in 1866 as a more famous man charged with far greater crimes: Jefferson Davis stood accused of treason, piracy, and complicity in the murder of five hundred soldiers at Andersonville Prison.

Northerners, among them Horace Greeley and Cornelius Vanderbilt, put up Davis's bail. The most influential Northerners had lost their appetite for prosecuting him. They would either create a martyr or, if they failed to convict, cast doubt on the northern version of the war. The judge in the Davis proceeding suspended the trial indefinitely, and Davis went free.

Henry, born in New Jersey and nineteen at the time of his arrest, received a sentence of ten years. Sending poor men to prison while the powerful walked fed a Gilded Age romanticization of criminals like Jesse James. John Henry turned out to have received a death sentence administered by Huntington's Chesapeake and Ohio. Reformers justified the leasing of convicts to corporations because it allowed better conditions than living in decrepit, overcrowded, and brutal Virginia prisons. Henry, and the more than two hundred other convicts contracted to the Chesapeake and Ohio, initially did unskilled work around the tunnels piercing the mountains. But in 1870 new steam drills on the Lewis Tunnel began to fail, and the convicts were thrown into the task of hand-drilling the holes for explosives and clearing debris in the tunnel. Henry probably died in 1873 after working the tunnel. The cause of death was silicosis, tuberculosis, or pneumonia, any or all of them brought on or exacerbated by the microscopic pieces of sandstone and other rocks that he and other workers inhaled after drills and explosions shattered the rocks. Everyone working the tunnel was probably dead within a few years. Nearly one hundred convicts either returned to the prison only for burial or died soon after their arrival. Roughly 8o percent were young black men. One of them was John Henry."

It was adult, white, wealthy males in this country who first read and fell in love with the Harry Potter books. Though written by a British female, initially described by the rich white American men who "discovered" her as a working-class single mom, J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter books are clever modern reworkings of the English schoolboy novel. Harry as our modern-day hero is the supersmart, gifted, blessed, white boy genius (a mini patriarch) who "rules" over the equally smart kids, including an occasional girl and an occasional male of color. But these books also glorify war, depicted as killing on behalf of the "good."

The Harry Potter movies glorify the use of violence to maintain control over others. In Harry Potter: The Chamber of Secrets violence when used by the acceptable groups is deemed positive. Sexism and racist thinking in the Harry Potter books are rarely critiqued. Had the author been a ruling-class white male, feminist thinkers might have been more active in challenging the imperialism, racism, and sexism of Rowling's books.

Again and again I hear parents, particularly antipatriarchal parents, express concern about the contents of these books while praising them for drawing more boys to reading. Of course American children were bombarded with an advertising blitz telling them that they should read these books. Harry Potter began as national news sanctioned by mass media.
Books that do not reinscribe patriarchal masculinity do not get the approval the Harry Potter books have received. And children rarely have an opportunity to know that any books exist which offer an alternative to patriarchal masculinist visions. The phenomenal financial success of Harry Potter means that boys will henceforth have an array of literary clones to choose from.
