The jobs outlook is uncertain and the stakes are high (for students most of all, but also for colleges). I talked to a bunch of experts to see what institutions can do more of to prep students for success in this environment: Ideas here: www.insidehighered.com/news/student...
🏛️ Put career services in the president’s cabinet for responsiveness and culture change.
🧩 Scale experiential learning—including by determining the “minimum viable definition” of experiential learning for your context.
🤝 Build students’ social capital because it’s even more about WHO you know now.
🧠 Focus on foundations and adaptability. This means double down on durable, human skills for that human edge—but that alone is not a strategy.
🤖 Add AI-specific programs and pathways because there’s a robust hiring market for graduates (even students) with these skills.
🚀 Treat entrepreneurship as a hedge—and a mindset. Success in the future will require failure, iteration and creating opportunity.
📊 Watch (but don’t chase) labor-market data. Both overreacting and under-reacting carry risk, and the most clarity is often at the local level.
🌐 Build the ecosystem, because higher ed can’t do this alone. This is the kind of structural problem that requires real engagement by employers, government and nonprofits.
